I honestly do think they know, but part of their warranty/buyback is to go through these steps anyway.hilarious that ford had no idea that a good paint job would be 15k
i bet they tried twisting that paint shops arm too for a cheaper job
For example they initially denied my buyback request, and my dealer petitioned up the chain and it was approved pretty quickly after.
Later on they told me my case was denied at first because I didn't "have a history" as in this was my only issue as a new Ford owner/they wouldn't approve it right off the bat because there wasn't a track record of issues with the car/me as an owner with previous Ford vehicles/etc. Once it was on my account that my car needed 15k of work, they quickly offered to buy it back.
I will also say I think their good will extends, as a few years later out of warranty on my replacement Mustang my steering rack went out, and they covered about 75% of the cost + loaned me a Explorer for 3 weeks while they investigated the issue. (I think/wonder if it might be part of a TSB, a Ford engineer had to come out and everything after the dealer techs all tried a lot of different things) Ended up about $1200 out of pocket for me on a 3k+ job. I did like the Explorer too, that's a nice vehicle.
So long story short my experience is it's just bureaucratic red tape they make you jump through before things can be made right. Probably all due to lawyers and being sued etc. But so far for me they have made things right in the end.
FWIW too my buyback Mustang sat about 2 hours away from me for a year, then was sold to NJ. I got a dealership service notice one day for it and ran the VIN. It turned out the car was now lemon lawed in New Jersey on their official state list, so Ford tried to pawn it off on someone else and thank god they found out. I posted the VIN on the forums with a warning, it shows up if you google search the vin for that car.
Well that was a long post about Ford.
