The only ones that don't look like that haven't been in a car for long. Ford doesn't bother to paint the iron, as doing so adds cost and process time, but adds little to no actual value. Owners almost never see it, and if it really bothered you, I'd suggest a coat of POR15.

Now, I have seen older stamped steel axle covers rust through, but to be fair, they usually do get painted for that reason. But the iron casting isn't going to have that issue.

Like others have stated, the surface rust on the housing is normal, it does not affect the operation in any way, if it really bugs you... spend some cash and get some POR15 or if you want to be cheap, tape it off and spray it down with rustolem rust converter... it'll be a dull black.
but in any case... it doesn't hurt it.

They do this on some of the greenway trail bridges around here. The initial layer of rust prevents oxygen from interacting with the metal, and it mostly stops the corrosion.

Edit: ^^^ Same thing he said above
Those people are feeding you a crock of bullshit. Rust is oxidation and eventually there won't be a bridge left.

When you change your motor oil, take a paint brush and apply some oil to the bare metal parts. DO NOT do the round shiny things that the wheels bolt to. Lol

Thanks for that info.. I want a Mustang body made out of that steel. When it gets to the shade of rust that I like, I could clear coat it.

There's vinyl for that. Probably cheaper.

I find it highly amusing that the wrap on the car above made the aluminum and plastic parts rusty as well. If they wanted real credibility, the aluminum would tarnish and oxidize (especially near steel parts), and the plastic would have looked dried out, UV damaged and cracked. All that and the headlamps are still nice and clear...

Right, at one time the thinking was that it would remain as only surface oxidation but as with the Weathering Steel (Corten) Guardrails they found this wasn't the case.

Most laughable thread ever

I really like my Mustang but, neither it nor any other item made by man is going to last forever. That said, the cast iron Differential is not going anywhere in your lifetime because of rust, unless you sink it in a body of saltwater. But if it bothers you paint it, and anything else you desire. As for me I'd rather not have to pay extra for unnecessary underbody beautification. But I did put a coat of wax on the chassis stiffening rails on my vert when I removed them to install my receiver hitch. :headbang:
