other car looked like a < 3000 pound subcompact. If other car was another 3700 pound Mustang, or worse, a 6000 pound truck / SUV ... :eyebulge:
The other car was a 2013 or 2014 Hyundai Elantra. I know because my wife has the exact same car in the same color (sans the damage - thankfully). and you're right, the Mustang gave as much as it took due to the similar weight classes of the two vehicles.

I'm just impressed the OP is able to continue to post with messed up fingers.

I wonder if it a good or bad idea to remove your hands from the steering wheel just before an impact (the way race car drivers do before they hit the wall), or if changing the position of your hands/arms will make the airbag impact worse.

EDIT: Hmmm... now I'm not so sure. The wheel (rim) and side contour, plus the brake light looks like a late model Elantra, but that is not an Elantra headlight... Looks more like a Chevy Aveo or something....

I was wondering about the fingers. Is this something that can be prevented, or at least reduced odds ?

Oh....what I meant was that the Mustang (and all other cars, presumably) has received safety enhancements since the early 2000s that make it heavier, but much safer.

I knew that's what you meant. My old car would be bad from almost any angle. Modern car safety is still somewhat relative though. IIHS does a good job with its crash tests, but mostly those are of similar weight classes, traveling at reasonable speeds. Vary either one of those parameters, and forces climb exponentially. Unfortunately IIHS doesn't test all the popular cars. in particular, they don't properly test "sports" cars, because buyers of "sports" cars are less concerned about safety.

That looked brutal. The car looked pretty stiff seems like breaking your hands.

I'm glad you are OK and you can still likely type better/faster than me!! I hope you have a very fast recovery and are able to replace that selfless Mustang with one that will serve you just as well!
