How do you guys normally downshift?

I pretty much rev match all of the time. Whenever I downshift without rev matching, I feel as if I'm beating on the car, even though the car can handle it. I also hear a loud click when I downshift normally, which is unnerving.

I normally don't if I'm slowing down for a stoplight, but for making turns/corners and passing I do.

Let me reword the question for the auto guys: Do you downshift on your own with the paddles, or do you let the ECU downshift for you?

Routinely rev-match/blip on downshifts. Smoother ride and easier on the drivetrain. Replacing brake pads is easier and cheaper than replacing a clutch.

Sorry im not exactly sure what rev matching is but I normally let the ECU shift for me even in S mode. Ive tried to do it myself but its a pain and have ended up downshifting too soon/too high and making myself look like a fool lol.

Thanks for responding everyone!

Another question... Since I don't rev match perfectly every time, is it better to over-rev or under-rev when this happens?

Rev matching is when you blip the throttle (tapping the gas pedal to get the RPMs up) before shifting into a lower gear.

Thats a lot of work on the street, I'm in an Auto car and I've noticed that when in Sport+ mode the car will rev match when down shifting. It sounds great. Feels pretty good too. I've only had the car for 54 days so I'm still getting the hang of the different modes and features. I have not done any real time in S and Sport+ mode. That might let me do the shifting like a manual.

I always revmatch on a downshift. I feel it puts more wear on the components to just let the synchros take it. Also, the ride is smoother so the lady is happy, and it sounds awesome to do it :)

I've driven standard for 20 something years and have never rev matched a downshift and I've never had a cluth or transmission problem on any of those cars. When I try it I have alot of trouble timing the blip and clutch engagement, I mean, I'm white and can't dance..so....

I try, but when I try to blip the throttle it seems like it is never enough. Back to practicing I guess...

It's not that hard to rev match. Just give it some gas before letting off the clutch.

Usually it takes a few times for me to figure out how much gas to give it on down shifts for different speeds. In my old car I rev matched every down shift and at 200k miles when I sold it it still had the original clutch in it. If you get the hang of it it's better for the clutch. If you can't get the hang of it you are probably better of not doing it.

The new autos rev matching should tell you it's better.
