I just replaced my starter with a genuine Ford one and can get about $25 if I return the old starter ($35 minus $10 for shipping). The starter still cranks but slowly. I can't find anyone that rebuilds them, or even find a kit where I can try to rebuild it myself. I'm thinking that it may come in handy someday if I have the old one, but then again I collect junk and have a basement full of stuff I will probably never use. I have it packed in the box and ready to return, should I send it or hold on to it?

Likely 0 chance you would want to use it when its already bad and i can't think of any parts you would take off of it for anything else. Send it back so we don't see you on an episode of Hoarders in the future. :)

I probably would never put that starter back in but the thought of only getting $25 for it just frustrates me. The new one costs $305 and to get $25 for the core, which can probably be rebuilt, just seems too low. I'm thinking I can call it a $25 investment towards my education of starters if I tear it apart to see what is wrong with it. It still started the car, so how bad could it be? I'm going to rip it apart tomorrow and take a look. If I can't figure out what is wrong I bet it would make a nice lamp base.
