I had a little trouble getting the lower strut bolts (that attach the spindle to the strut) out. So, the nuts took quite a pounding, to the point that the socket won't easily slip back on. Would this type of nuts be available at a local hardware or auto parts store?

Damn. I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer. Seems like and nut of the right size and grade would work. Time to call the dealer.

You can run with a washer and nut if you are in a bind. However I'd only do that temporarily.
