Repair Costs

My wife and I were on the highway going to visit my parents yesterday, and another driver cut over into our lane. Somehow the car stayed stable and did not spin. Luckily another driver behind us stopped to give a report to the highway patrol. Any guesses on repair costs? Wheel and taillight have some damage. Car is still drivable. Rear parking sensors no longer work. The inside of the trunk was pushed in as well.

Did the other driver take off or pull over with you?

You're probably looking at a $10k repair bill at the bare minimum, not knowing what damages may be underneath the rear 1/4 area. That rear 1/4 has to be taken off and replaced.

VIN will be dinged via future VIN reporting agencies, so request diminished value from Insurance Co.

That is what my wife guessed. I was thinking $8k until I saw the trunk interior pushed in.

i wouldn't be surprised if it got into 5 digits fast. 8-12K. that quarter needs to be replaced, everything under it has to be pulled out, that taillight must be toast. new wheel, don't let them just refinish it.

The lady behind me said that the other driver was passing on the right (I was in the center lane) and tried to cut back over between her car and mine. She could not believe we didn’t spin.

OP, glad you and the wife are OK! Do not forget about filing for diminished value. You can wait until everything is estimated and they acknowledge responsibility, and then call the adjuster and say "by the way...". That type of claim is usually difficult to get, so stick with it!

I'd think there's a fair chance that repairs exceed $12k. If the damage affected the inner structure, as reported, then it could be possible that the rear was shifted towards the drivers side which will make the repair more complicated.
