Question for anyone else who’s bought their GT500 out of state and brought it in. DMV website is garbage, but if I’m understanding it correctly...

1) bring car into CA
2) get smog inspection (even thought it’s a brand new 50 state car)
3) get vehicle inspection at DMV
4) register vehicle

I don't think the car will require a smog check.

Thanks for that Earl. I think I’m going to call that technical compliance phone number listed at the bottom and see if I can get a solid answer out of someone. I very much hope I don’t have to do steps 2 and 3 I listed above.

You may have to take to DMV just so they can confirm that it does comply. It may be as simple as them looking at a few decals.

WA. They also won’t/can’t do CA sales tax when I take possession. So I’ll have to do that as well when I register at the DMV

Not sure if this is still relevant now but a friend of mine from San Francisco purchased the very last Base R model assembled at the FRAP namely "JR394" and he purchased that car brand new from a dealership in Virginia Beach, Va. and if I recall he got this car for ~$6,500 below MSRP therefore hit the jackpot.

Once he had his car transported home he had to go through the exact process that you listed above and had all kinds of issues in order to get his car to pass the smog inspection.

Hopefully you will not have to go through that process but recall talking to him numerous times about this issue and he finally got his car compliant.

Good luck!

I did this before when I came back to CA from Texas in 2017 with my 2016 mustang, so I’m familiar with this part

Thanks. What sort of issue did he have?

I was just looking a few window sticker and all the ones I looked at had "50 STATE EMISSIONS" certification.

This is my understanding as well Earl. But I wouldn’t put it past the crazy liberals in Sacramento to still require a smog check even thought it the car has “50 state emissions”. I’ll see what happens next week when I take possession of the car. Dealer told me car should be delivered from the rail yard tomorrow, and I’ll be flying up on Monday to take ownership and start the drive down.

My understanding was that when he took his car for the smog test it did not meet the emission standards as required in Ca.
Interesting, that’s a very unfortunate story. Hope that’s not a common thing.

Understood and to the best of my knowledge that Ca. legislation/certification has been in place for many decades now but can only relay to you what took place with a friend of mine in the Bay area with respect to the brand new 2018 R model that he imported from Virginia.

100% you're going to have to get it smogged. I purchased mine in New York shipped to California. You're going to have to get a VIN verified from DMV. It's a process it's not quick and make sure they charge the right taxes cuz I just got a bill for $1,000 from my dealer for short of registration even though they have my zip code and my tax rate.
