Purely a guess, but if it has to do with the auto adjust for headlights in the rear view, I would say it's just photosensitive. Camera shouldn't mess with it.

It's aimed to the front not the rear.

Simple google search came up with the sensor to detect ambient lighting for auto headlights and dash brightness.

It is the sensor for the auto dimming mirror. One of two sensors; the other is on the mirror side. It compares the difference in light "seen" by both sensors to determine how much to dim the mirror. Page 79 of the manual:
Auto-Dimming Mirror
Note: Do not block the sensors on the front
and back of the mirror. Mirror performance
may be affected. A rear center passenger or
raised rear center head restraint may also
block light from reaching the sensor.

I believe the sensor for the auto headlights and dash dimming is the "pimple" in the center of the dash at the base of the windshield.

Don't have my car yet but easy way to test is to cover each of these locations separately, during the day, and see which one turns the headlights on.

What it does is there are two light sensors. One looks at the front and one rear. This is how auto dimming works:
If front sees bright situation and rear also sees bright situation, mirror does not dim.
If front sees dark situation and rear sees bright situation, mirror dims.
So if you block the sensor, your mirror will dim during the day.

Thanks all for the info! Since John posted this after my doubts, and it is also on the manual, it's me the one to blame with "Read the f... manual!!" :D
And actually I read it, but it's passed quite some time so I start to forget things..
