rear seats coupe v convertable

OK, I am buying a Mustang. Its decided and there is no going back.
However, I am slightly concerned about rear space. I have a 14 year old son who has to get in the back. He is about the same height as me (about 5ft 10in) and I think he is still growing.
Now, he did tell me that he would cut his legs off for me to get a Mustang but I dont think he has really thought it through. I cant afford the medical bill and he plays football in the winter and cricket in the summer. So I have ruled that out.

Now my question to you that own Mustangs or have got up close and personal to the new Stang is, what would give the most leg/head room in the back? Coupe or Convertible. I would be interested to know.

Before anyone says, I have worked out that there will be more head room in the rag top when the top is down but I live in Jolly Ole Blighty, not California. The roof will be up most the time.

The rear leg and head room are slightly larger in the convertible but the shoulder and hip room are smaller to allow for the top to store. Definitely the passenger side would be more comfortable with the seat pushed forward!

I sat in a 2014 non-vert a couple of days ago to see whether it would fit me and my family.

I am 5'11', but tend to sit a little closer to the pedals with the front of the seat relatively high (this is a setup I use for track days to help keep me in the seat during hard braking while leaving my feet free for heel/toe shifting).

I setup the front seat the way I like it, then climbed in behind the driver's seat. I had plenty of leg room. I couldn't stretch my legs, but for a 30 minute drive it would be fine.

However, head room was barely adequate. I was able to sit relatively comfortably, but had essentially zero room between my head and the rear glass. For the 2015, the fastback head room is essentially the same (0.1" more in the 2015), but the vert gives another inch or so due to the more "sedan" like profile.

I didn't notice shoulder or hip room being an issue. So, if headroom is a significant concern, you might want to go for a vert, but if I were young I could definitely manage the fastback for medium duration trips.

OK, so I sat my son in the back of a Toyota GT86 today and then I sat in the drivers seat. I was a bit more forward then I would like but I could easily live with it. Son was comfi too.
Anyone know how this car would compare to the 2015 Mustang rear head room wise?

My Mom traded her first Mustang, a 73 Mach-1 because I was getting big for the back seat when I was 7. I always felt bad because I knew She Loved that car. So when she decided to buy another 73 Mach-1 when I was 16 I made sure I didn't complain about riding in the back seat because I knew I was going to get to drive it some day. Not only did I get to drive it, it was the car I learned to drive in and took my Driving Test in. You should have seen the Woman's face at the DMV when we walked out to a Bright Yellow with Black Stripes, 73 Mustang Mach -1 and a 16 1/2 year old 6'4" kid for the Driving Test. I did fine, in fact she said I was the first Perfect Score she ever had on a First Attempt.

Oh, Anyway, I think Legroom will be about the same in the Fastback or the Convertible. If nothing else tell him to sit Side Saddle. That's what I tell anyone riding in the back of My Cars anyway. LOL As the others have already said though, Headroom will be better in the Vert with the Top Up and Great with the Top Down. LOL. However it will be more cramped Width wise due to the Interior Quarter Panels of the Convertible being wider for the Top Folding Mechanism.

I own an 86 and cannot believe either of you was even remotely comfortable. I'm 5'10" and can barely get a single piece of paper between the back of my seat and the front of the back seat.

I would go with your son's grades.

If they're good, get the convertible. If they aren't up to par, get the coupe and stuff him in the back .

But yeh, it was OK, I was a bit closer to the steering wheel than I would like and he was very close to front seat with his knees but not touching.

I just want to know if Mustang will be the same, better or worse.

The mustang is larger in all dimensions (or the same) but not in a "wow, look how much more space I have in here" way, merely from a "Man, I can survive just a little longer back here" sort of way. Biggest difference is the front legroom, and I am hoping that the telescoping wheel and the new shifter position allows for a bit more of that front legroom to translate to rear legroom... remains to be seen though.

Great stuff. It helps but I just think sitting in the car will be the telling time.

My patents both had 2 door coupes when I was a kid, a 69 Chevy Nova and a 69 Mercury Cougar. I preferred to ride around in the back of the Cougar even though it was a tight fit and because it was way cooler than any of my friends family sedans or wagons. Now my kids sit in the back of my Mustang. Sometimes the front, if one is good.
