A little disappointing it isn't sync3 but then that means it'll be cheaper than a sync3 conversion? But the whole unit looks clean. I kinda like the bezel and have to wonder if one could just buy that. It'll save me the trouble of cutting my base bezel.

I'm in for one once they are for sale. I trust American muscle more than the companies selling the other units

It'll come full, no cutting required. As long as it's same set-up as Moddictions which it should be

Does the brightness of the screen follow the dimming of the gauges when it's dark out? Or does it only follow the dimming of the manual gauge brightness control?

The brightness of the screen does follow the gauges and system themes are switched automatically based on headlamp on or off.

Another unit that doesn't display the station name or track title from over the air radio (at least on this units version). While not an important feature, its something the base radio does that these should also do.

I'm wondering if this unit will display album art or screen mirror like moddiction does or allow you to have a picture for a screen saver

Review

Ok guys my review is ready! I have been using over the weekend and have come up with a pro/con list for this "review". One extra thing to note here, I have not come across any major bugs such as time zone/time issues, chopped text, etc... It is a very stable build of this software which is a major plus. Pictures of most of the main screens are attached below as well.

Pros

  • Excellent Navigation with IGO Nextgen - This is one of the best features of the unit by far. Excellent UI design, very responsive, well done map routes with real time alternate routes (if turned on), and excellent integration with the system as a whole. I would say the Nav system is comparable to Google maps with just a few missing features, such as traffic info.

  • Very well done rendition of Sync 2 (MyFord Touch) UI - Quadrants are as you would expect and it even has integrated climate control. However, the climate control is very basic, only allowing for control over air direction and defrost. Both fan speed and temperature settings remain manual controls on the bezel and not available through the display.

  • System responsiveness- This is arguably the most standout feature of this unit compared to OEM MyFord Touch. The unit is very responsive, fast, and comparable to a current day tablet.

  • Speaking of display, the Raxiom Units display is excellent in terms of sharpness and color quality. The colors are not washed out like those of the OEM MyFord Touch.

  • Sync integration- The sync quadrant of the Raxiom Unit is the base 4.2” screen. It is largely unchanged, retaining all features of the 4.2” screen and navigation through its menus. Current sync info is a display in the center readout with dedicated buttons to the left for navigation through audio sources and phone functions.

  • HDMI mirroring- While I have not personally been able to try this feature (due to the lack of a lighting cable to HDMI for my iPhone), it is a welcome feature that allows for screen mirroring of your phone screen to the 8” display. From here you could display things such as Google maps or other services. One thing to note though is that your phone will not be able to be controlled from the 8” screen.

  • Rear view camera- This feature is finally usable with a larger screen! The Raxiom unit has two modes that can be changed in the settings for the camera: OEM and Aftermarket. OEM displays just the green and red lines, no steering input. Aftermarket provides steering input as well as backup sensor support, if installed.

  • OBD Info- Small but sometimes useful readouts for things like door ajar, voltage, speed, and so on.

  • Dimming- The screen dims with the gauge controls! This is a very nice feature that helps tie in the system with the rest of the vehicle controls.

Cons

  • Display- While I know I have the screen in the pros section, there are a few issues. First is that the screen is too glossy. This makes it very difficult to read in bright sunlight conditions. Additionally, the screen seems to be rather dim at the current standard brightness setting. In some cases it is nearly impossible to see on screen info in sunlight.

  • UI - While the Sync 2 UI rendition is done well, I would have preferred to see a more customized/different UI design.

  • Customizability- Or lack there of… There are no user customizability options when it comes to screen background or colors in the main UI. Maps app does allow for custom themes and map appearances.

  • Home screen- The home screen is odd at times. While it will update info relating to fan speed, it will not update the radio if the tune dial is turned. The sync quadrant is a very basic “bluetooth connected” or “bluetooth disconnect” readout. It would have been nice if the current sync info like bluetooth track info could be displayed in this quadrant.

  • Radio default- On startup the Unit will default to the radio for audio source. I personally use sync more than radio, so it would have been nice to at least have the option to select the default media source.

All in all, the Raxiom 8” unit is a very nice upgrade for all base owners. It has a few quirks and minor flaws here and there, but there is no beating the excellent navigation software and 8” screen size. Installation was very straight-forward and could be completed in a weekend afternoon! When passing by, someone could easily mistake the Raxiom unit for OEM MFT with the OEM quality bezel. Isn't that what this is all about!?

Screen mirroring - Yes, there are two supplied cables for android/samsung phones and a lighting to hdmi adapter is required for iPhones but it does do screen mirroring.

Album art - It does not.

Customization - None unfortunately.

Having OEM look is important but it seems they should have allowed for custom backgrounds since people seem to want it. Also, it would be nice if they allowed more OBD II info. Does it show you tire pressure at each tire so you know which tire it is that's low (if that comes up)?
