I wonder how the sensor for the Rain Sensing Wipers would react going through an automated car wash..

My Mustang won't see a car wash, it will be done by hand.

My 2007 BMW 3 had rain sensing wipers. Once while on a road trip through the mid west, I ran out of washer fluid. The bugs were as thick as fur on the wind shield but I had no wash to clean it. the bugs were bad but not so bad I could see.

The bugs got thick enough to cover the sensor and they automatic turned on and just smeared the bugs into a gooy mess and visibility was almost non-existent to the point of being a serious hazard. No kidding! NOT A GOOD THING!

20 miles later a service station and a bug pad squeegee and water to the rescue.

I swore I'd never get automatic rain sensing wipers ever again.

Or perhaps just fill up your washer fluid a little more frequently?

And yeah, no car wash for me. You know that's the easiest way to ensure you get swirl marks, right? Plus, I just hate not going over my car in detail every few weeks. It's nice to make sure you know when you get a scratch here or there, or worse.

I've also went all out, and bought a foam gun, some quality soap, and lots of nice micro-fiber towels to take care of my car. I've practiced on my Jetta so I'm ready to go when the Stang gets here.

How would you get swirl marks from a brushless wash?

OP didn't say anything about 'brushless' he said automated, around here they're pretty much all are touch wash.

If it was touch-less, who would give a damn if the wipers turned on.

I have a 2008 Volvo (probably same tech Ford is using now, since ours was designed while Volvo was part of Ford), and the rain sensing wipers can be turned on and off. I'm sure the Mustang will have the same feature.

Automated doesn't denote brushless or not. They can BOTH be automated. My question was directed to you (should have quoted originally) since you said:

You didn't say anything about brushless, automation, etc., simply no car washes period. I was asking a legitimate question about swirl marks because I thought you were insinuating that ANY automated wash could/would result in them.

umm, at least in the 2006 and 2013's,(and since it's the same system, don't know why they would have changed for 2007) you have to actively turn the rain sensing wipers on every time you start the car. That means that you had them on earlier due to rain and never turned it off. In reality, rain sensing wipers (at least for BMW) only really control the speed of the wipers during the rain. What this means is that you don't have to constantly fiddle with the wiper speed once you turn them on, they will adjust automatically.

If I took my wife's 3 series through a car wash, I would not have any problems because the system would not be turned on (who takes a car through the wash in the rain?)

So, in practice, it's not turn it off when going through a car wash, but don't turn them on.

Now, ford may be different (have not used their sensor system), but if it is like the BMW system, it won't be an issue. I like mine and have never had a problem with them in over 8 years.

The Ford rain sensing wiper system requires you to activate the wipers by moving the wiper stalk up. You can switch it between Off, Intermittent, and Continuous. For my '14 Escape, you flip the wiper stalk up one position to enable the wipers then you set the sensitivity with the rotating part (similar to how you'd do it in a regular wiper system). If you flip it up two spots (one past enabling them) it will wipe continuously.
