Don't dismiss the ability of a radar detector to not false alarm. It can be so annoying that you just turn it off or tune it out, either case you won't get the benefit of being warned if real threats are present.

That being said the low end detectors (and $150 is low end) meat their price point by not have the processing ability to reject false signals.

I would recommend doing a search on the web for radar detector comparison tests. It's the best way to get a mostly objective assessment.

I have been using detectors for 40 years and here are my must haves in order of importance;

1. Great False Signal Rejection.
2. Lots of volume to be heard over open windows, the stereo or loud exhaust
3. Ability to turn off X-Band, its not used by law enforcement in my area at all but is for security systems and door openers.
4. Range is only a consideration in that the detector will alarm before you can be clocked. Having something that can pick up a signal that is 5 miles away is pointless. Even the cheapest detectors meet this requirement.
5. Ability to detect laser. For the most part if it goes off for laser you have been clocked.
