Hey all, got my black R yesterday. After a nice wash down, I discovered a strange paint issue on my carbon fiber wing. It's probably one foot long and only visible at certain angles and lighting. But once you see it, it's unmistakable. I cannot buff it off; it's almost like it's baked into the paint. And the surrounding area has almost a paint-brush-like look to it. I plan to take it to my local dealer (I bought this out of state so I cant go to them) this Monday to correct the front splitter and remove the shipping wheel blocks. But I need to show them this paint issue. Any thoughts? I assume any paint defect is a warranty issue. But how do they work on a carbon fiber wing? What would you do if this was your R?

Simple. Go get a new wing under warranty. Dont let them offer to repaint.

1) TX dealer says it was flawless when it left them.
2) Now I have this issue.
3) Will take it to local dealer this Monday.

Question, as someone mentioned to me privately: Could this have passed Ford QC at Flat Rock? It almost looks like it has been "touched up".

Unfortunately this is not the first paint defect I see on these cars. Obviously this is a warranty issue, no matter what the dealer says. The defect is below the clear (or paint, if the wing has no clear). Get the wing replaced under warranty and be happy it was not on a fixed body panel. I might ask for something for my trouble as well if I were you. Sorry, and good luck!

Look closely at the black paint all around the defect. You will notice a little bit of sparkle in the black paint. If the sparkle is consistent, then it can be pretty well proven that the wing was not touched up. Honestly, it looks like an imperfection in the carbon fiber that was painted over. I don't know who paints these wings (ford or the manufacturer), but it looks like there was little to no prep of the surface before paint.

It's a shame. Those wings are very expensive. If there was some way to buy the core, I would do that. However, I don't think ford would let that happen.

Dealer repainted mine (was not defect - just chipped). Came out great. They outsource their paint work. Warranty covered it. Yours could be carbon defect. That obviously will be a different outcome.

Best of luck, if they decide to replace it just let me know where I can pick this one up.

Ford will not let that happen.

Just an update. Ford approved repair. Took it to body shop today. They removed the spoiler so I could take the car home and not leave it there. They said it just looks like a terrible finish by Ford. They've never seen one like it. They will sand it down and do all they need to do, and said if it is cracked underneath, they will request replacement. Anyways out of my hands and have to wait about a week. Hope they do a good job (their reviews are really good).

Driving it around without the rear spoiler, it's nice having an absolutely clear rear-view

Here are some pics from today...

I like to disassemble things.
Make sure they put the dog bones back on and not just nuts/washers!

EDIT - I say this because the reinforcing brackets are pretty much unobtainable without purchasing another wing from Ford.

Looks so weird without a wing. Glad they are fixing it.
