Hey Folks, I have always wondered why some people drive their convertibles with the top down, front windows down and back windows up? I’ve seen this many times and I’m at a loss as to why. It also looks strange as well.

Any thoughts?

They're torn between looking like a dork (top down, windows up), or not (top down = windows down).

...(pause for replies from dorks)

Think it might have to do with wind in the cabin.

Never understood it. To me it looks to easy to get fouled up. I’ll proudly admit I’m one of the dorks with all the windows up at highway speeds.

This substantially reduces turbulence in the cockpit, especially in strong cross winds. As does the windscreen. While I don’t mind the breeze, when my wife is with me she prefers a more calm environment. That said, we've done drives as low as 3C top down, so that makes up for it.

I also often have the windows up on my highway commute (whenever I get back to that) as it reduces road noise from adjacent vehicles greatly.

He's speaking specifically to having the rear quarter windows up and front windows down. It makes no sense. If anything, the buffeting would drive me crazy.

Totally overtaking this thread lol. This is acceptable at highway speeds, wayyy more comfortable and less cross-breeze.

Ah, yes, you are correct. I’ve never tried that so can’t speak to what it does, other than look funny.

OP, are you asking about Mustangs specifically or convertibles in general?

Yes, all convertible. It looks strange, and I was wondering if it served a purpose. I’ve tried it on my 18, but it seemed to make no differenc.

Well, as has been said, on the Mustang all of the windows come down automatically and I can't see a reason to raise just the rear quarter windows.
On different models and especially older convertibles tops can be lowered without lowering the windows. I'd suspect that people who drive with just the rear glass up either forgot they were up or were too lazy to put them down.
I will use the front windows, along with the wind screen, on the highway to cut road noise and buffeting and in cooler weather.

Sheesh. If anyone's concerned about the wind mussing up your hairdo, just close the top and be done with it.
I suppose we'd never get you onto a motorcycle.
Free air doesn't bother me; that's part of why I drive convertibles. My first ragtop was a TR3 - it didn't even have windows to roll up. I drove an Eldorado convertible for years, and never even considered driving top down, windows up. Tops and windows are for inclement weather. And that's when I take the F Pace.

And while I have your attention, you kids get off my lawn!!!

Also, happy Fathers Day! 🧙‍♂️

I’m sure this was partially in jest but my wife has very sensitive ears to pressure changes (flying is really tough on her) So running at highway speeds, particularly with gusty cross winds, bother her. When I’m alone in the car, the windows and screen are rarely up, unless it’s below 5 or 6C.
