Purchase sight unseen?

The Mustang I want unfortunately isn’t local to me but my local dealer does have a relationship with the other dealership and is able to have the car transferred. Unfortunately this means I would be buying the car sight unseen to make this happen.

How bad of a decision is purchasing the car sight unseen? It is a 2016 but it seems some of the body panel issues still are present in this year’s builds as well. There is also the 50/70 mph vibration issue some people ran into, etc.

I know that the warranty would cover issues but then again I also know that some issues may be quite the hassle to have resolved.

Well, people order cars without seeing them all the time.
If anything is not perfect with the car, that's what the warranty is for.

I had the vibration issue on my 15 mustang V6 drop top it is a drive shaft issue do not let the dealer tell you its not they needed to clamp weights to it to get it to balance right and that fixed it so it you have the issue tell them you want a ford eng to come and look at the drive shaft and skip all the BS they are going to tell you they need to do. with mine I told the dealer it was a balance issue and they did tire rotation and road force , when that did not work the put not one but two new drive shafts in and they were worst then the oem one. I made sure they did not return my oem one until I was happy with the fix. It turned out that they put my oem one back in the car and balanced that one and now the car is fine. just my story to help you out if you have trouble

Don't sign papers until you inspect the car. I drove 400 miles for my car, inspected it then signed papers.

the risk is on the dealer. Have them get the car. You drive it and check it out before you sign the paperwork.

The panel issues or vibration. No big deal. That is what a warranty is for.

I would ask that the car gets "shipped" not have a porter go drive it from one dealer to another. I would not want a 19 year old intern or porter ragging my new car out before i get it.

Get your financing in line to purchase, get insurance quotes, etc...but don't sign papers sight unseen, no.

Have you driven a 2015+ Mustang yet? I would do so to make sure you're comfortable and such..it's not a car for everyone.

Not really any different than ordering a car, if it comes in & you don't want it just don't take it !

Unless you know the person who would be driving your car back or it's being transported by truck, I think this is a bad idea.

If you have already test driven Mustangs and think this is the car you want: Call or email the dealer where the car is located and discuss pricing, tell them you're coming from far away and don't want to waste your time. Ask to put a refundable deposit down to hold the car while you come to see it.

I bought mine while it was still in transport. It was delivered to my house, and nothing was signed until there was an inspection. Financing and all that jazz was already taken care of prior to the car arriving. No biggie.

Can you not just pay the transfer fee? Kinda like carmax or are they literally making you give them money(check) before you see the car?

This is exactly how I bought my car. I went to my dealer with specific color/options wanted, and they found one at another dealer in adjacent state. I got the financing secured, and only signed paperwork for that. A week later the car came in and I went to pick it up, and inspected it, and signed the rest of the paperwork. My car did have 180 mi on it, so I'm not sure if my car was hauled or driven up. Now I didn't know about all these body panel alignment issues when I bought mine (last May) and my car has a few of those, only after I read about them online and inspected it closer long after purchase - would that have made me not go through with purchase? Probably not, I loved it that much. I did find one nick in the paint low on the driver side door that I missed during inspection (it rained for like the next week after I bought it, and didn't get to wash and inspect real good until then - and I can only assume it was there previously as I only had it a week - but no way to prove it) but I took it in and they touched it up, its hardly noticeable, and I even talked them into giving me some touch-up paint FREE for future ones. Oh and I need to also mention, I hadn't test drove a 2015 yet, in fact I didn't, until I drove it home - I wanted it that bad I didn't feel I needed to. Plus, like everyone else is saying, that's what the warranty is for.

What these guys said. How close is the dealership that has the car you're looking for? Would you be picking it up or having the car shipped to your door? I bought mine out of state and went to pick it up and gave it a look before I signed the papers to drive it off the lot.

Some deals are worth to flight and come back driving and enjoying. Nothing should go wrong...it's a new car. I actually bought a car that was on a dealer in NJ at a incredible price and I had 3 days off. Did all applications online, sent a wire transfer for $500 to secure the car and made then write on the email that if for any reason the car was not exactly what it represented, I wanted to be reimbursed for my flight and they did. It was perfect and drove 1800 miles flying...on 4 wheels. I saved thousands and got what I wanted! It wasn't the mustang I own but if you are up to it, I have a ford dealer locally that has incredible prices and they will take care of you just like it happen with a previous car. Think about it...just get some time to do all you can ahead, close in 1 hr and drive it away.
