So the chassis # for that is #PP001, and mine is #M2862, I wonder why that chassis starts with a PP.

It's a pre production car. I would be very surprised if that car was actually for sale. Notice the all black Mach 1 badges and the flat black lower grill. They were both changed by the time the Mach 1 went on sale. The badges were changed to silver with a black background and the lower grill was changed to glossy black.

I remember a video (but cannot find it anymore) where Jim Owens explained the chassis number letters. There was also something else for what was basically a mock-up car (maybe VP?).

This is from @PP0001 over in the GT350 forum:

After researching your same questions many years ago I found it very interesting that I received completely different answers from various different Ford personel and that includes some very knowledgeable and experienced people who are domiciled at both the corporate and assembly plant levels.

The most common terms for the 4 levels of Pre-Production cars that I have come up with after a lot of conversations over the years are:

VP - Variable Prototype
TT - Tooling Tryout
PP- Pilot Production
MP - Mass Production

Obviously there are numerous other iterations for the above Pre-Production designations which may be more accurate than mine but the above is what I have come to learn and go by.

I wonder how they ended up with the PP M1… and how many more PP M1’s are out there.

Just to sum up Jim Owens' explanation:
VP = vehicle prototype, hand built, with hand built components, not on a assembly line
TT = technical tool build, built of off-tooled components
PP = production prove-out
MP1 = mass production 1 (release candidate :))
MP2 = mass production 2 (final version)

i think those are questions that @PP0001 could give some thoughts on. i think with his knowledge on the gt350 side, some of that info would at least give us a starting point. if i remember correctly the PP cars are for Ford execs and vip's? and at some point they end up at auctions or at dealers with connections to important people. as far as how many there are, i would guess maybe 20 or so? completely a guess though.
Harry do you have any thoughts on how many potential PP mach 1's there could be out there?
