Hey All,

Figured i'd post here instead of going to the shop and possibly waisting time. I've been driving the v6 and i've found (i'm at 1k Miles) that when I drive with the AC on. The car's power delivery isn't smooth.

Don't get me wrong - i know ACs lower power and as soon as it turns on I lose some power. But this is random.

5th/6th gear with cruise control on the freeway. I can feel the car lose power through the pedal. It almost feels like a misfire - but it's not routine. It's random and doesn't matter based on RPM. It's very slight... like i'm suddenly engine braking or like i'm suddenly letting off the gas then back on.

It happens under light and heavy acceleration as well. Just more noticeable under cruise.

Is this something common with these engines? Or am I looking at a possible sticking AC Clutch/Pulley?

(I tried searching)

The V6 is a dog in 6th gear your RPM's are so low that you'll feel the lost of power with any change. When my stang was new and I was on the highway in 6th gear and tried to pass and step on the gas it took for eveI never use 6th gear on the highway 5th is my limit.

Yes AC will have a huge effect on an engine especially on a manual car.
Some cars have the throttle pedal response calibrated for the added drag for example, my FJ feels peppier with AC on weirdly.

For sure - but this is happening randomly when the AC is on. The AC should have a loss in power. But that loss in power should be linear - Not random and on/off?

Thing is it happens in every gear - not just 6th. I could be in 3rd at 4k RPM and it can happen.

Maybe the compressor is cycling?

Still, V6 is 300 HP. It's hard to imagine A/C having any noticeable effect on the engine. Any data out there on how much HP drag there is when an A/C kicks on ?

Depends on if they are cycling the pump or not.

I would say at least 10-20hp.
Although, if you can feel it, its not right.

I have a V-6 manual trans and have never felt the A C compressor when I turn the A C on. I am a Auto tech and have road tested almost every car made ,on some cars you can feel the compressor come, mostly 4 cylinders.

I hear you on that....some 4 cylinders feel like they lose half their power when the compressor comes on...

Just a final update - The A/C is shot. They have a replacement part on order. So it wasn't all in my head!

Techs drove it all of 5 minutes before determining the AC was in fact entirely broken. Good to have this replaced before it breaks the serpentine belt or worse.
