from inside the car, what is more noticeable than anything, is the sensation that the motor mounts have 2 inches of play. thats what it feel like. I hit the gas, I hear the exhaust, then a millisecond later I feel the LASH/CLUNK and car starts to accelerate.

And it literally is doing this every single time I touch the gas, or take my foot off the gas. Sometimes if I put the gas pedal just in the right position to cruise and maintain speed, it will fuckin oscillate back and forth on the lash with this slow gentle little clunk clunk clunk just rocking back and forth while my foot is holding steady throttle angle.

The overall sensation is really best described as it feels like a major drivetrain component is hardly fastened to the car.

Well im sure if youve beaten the car a lot with that whipple on its possible youve weakened the mounts some. But it still shouldn't clunk that much from motor mounts weakening. So far your clunk is the worst ive seen/heard of. Granted its a recording right next to the diff but..that was pretty loud.

Do you think there is any chance that tightening up the pinion nut torque could help? part of me feels like if the pinion didnt turn so loose that it might not smack on the lash so noisily. I am no differential expert.

I had some noise from mine Charles but no where close to that. I had everything out recently doing LCA bearings and took the diff back to Tacsa who did my gear change February last year and the lash was way out. They tightened it up to .008 and it is slick like silk now. I even switched from stock DS to CF DSS and it was night and day better. I get it aligned Monday and will drive the car frequently come then and I hope to find it still is quiet. Also, Tasca had 140 weight gear oil and I switched to Amsoil 90 weight so I'm sure that helped.

On a positive note, I did take the car out for a bit today to play with the new power and it fuckin rips pretty well. 3rd gear is a monster. 2nd gear seemed like ill be able to use it on warmer days and with some practice finely controlling that throttle plate.

I think you should try what Jmeo did and ask for his adjustment spec. Take it somewhere willing to listen and do what you ask, not argue. Its possible having if torqued down could help but i think its all in that lash.

Need video of monster 3rd gear pull
I have to decide tomorrow if I'm putting my exhaust on and leaving the diff alone for a while, or if I'm going to just tear it apart and take some time to try and sort it out.

If I put it back on the road, I'll take the go pro

Time to pull the rear cradle out again. I think I need to replace the Torsen differential.

Nothing new actually, its done this for as long as I can remember. I just cant stand to listen to it anymore. You touch the gas pedal CLUNK, you let off the gas pedal CLUNK.

Now that I have the solid diff and cradle mounts, its become insanely annoying.
You can pull the pumpkin out without dropping the cradle.

I have a brand new pumpkin with 3.31's going in soon.

I know I technically could. But, since I have springs and LCA bearings to install also, screw it.

How much was the brand new pumpkin? Maybe that is a better route for me than dicking around with this one.

Right around $800 shipped and with Trac Loc 3.31 gears not Torsen.

Let me know if you want one as I along with a friend who works at Ford helped Jason get his. I almost went this route but decided to stay with my Torsen and have the backlash adjusted.

Oh wow that is a deal. I'll have to research the Trac Loc. It doesn't come in a 3.55, right? I sort of like my gearing where it is now that I have it, but I could probably live with 3.31

Yes you can get 3.55. Track Loc is simply a clutch pack diff that's been around for ever.

Speed by design has pushed damn near 1100whp and trapped 157 on his and its just now starting to make noise in his differential. Hes still not sure its the differential itself. Waiting on a verdict in his thread still. Beef is still on his track lok and kelly at bmr was until recently. All (except watson and calverts) the fastest s550s so far did it on track lok from what ive seen. Its pretty durable.

I might scoop one up. Of course a manual trans will beat them up a lot more than the autos but for $800 why not
