Some co-workers were in the parking lot painting some metal tables. My car was about 7 car widths away and there was no wind. When I saw him painting he was close to the table and almost no mist floating around. Later on I saw him with the table up on a forklift spraying up in the air and a big overspray cloud around him.

I couldn't tell while at work because my car had a light coating of fine dust on it. When I got home I washed the windows and was able to see all the white overspray.

I searched and two other threads suggest to clay bar the car. If I want to take it to get detailed/fixed, what are the options the shop might do. I also need to get some bird poo stain and gum residue cleaned off also. I would plan to get reimbursed by my work.

Thanks

Clay bar-ing and polishing as a final step to remove micro marring on the paint will get this off. Rear glass is solvent safe (if oil based, if water based isopropyl will take it off). It is time consuming (the paint part) so do not expect this to be too cheap (unless you can do it yourself).

THIS GUY IS WRONG
DO NOT PUT LACQUER THINNER ON YOUR PAINT

it really depends on what kind of paint is on your car. enamel? mineral spirits.

be careful and rinse with water but don't use it on plastic stuff.

if its really bad get a quote from somewhere and get someone to pay for it.

don't use metal razor blades on glass, either, unless you're super careful. you can scratch it.

best thing to do is try clay bar first then buff.

get a quote from a paint correction or body shop.

Unfortunately mineral spirits will not remove fully cured overspray even if safe for modern clear coats. And if single stage paint then you need to be careful even with mineral spirits.

I never intended to try lacquer thinner or any other chemicals on my paint. I tried the Goo Gone stuff on the gum, worked a little bit. But, I was afraid, rinsed it off and washed right away.

My car needs a good polish and wax, so I thought this would give me a reason to get it done. I just didn't know what needed to be done or where to take it.

googone is fine for paint and just about anything else.
they make plastic razor blades you can use for the glass to keep from scratching it.

Wash it, then use a clay bar, and polish on the paint. There's no way in hell I'd put acetone or anything like it on my car. If the clay bar doesn't get most of it you might have to compound and then polish your car to get all of it. As for the windows, I use a product called "A-MAZ". It's a water based paste made for windows and is great for removing water spots and even overspray from glass. You can find it on amazon.

You can use a clay bar on the glass as well. Just use plenty of lube (no, not that kind of lube! This is a family site 🤣).

Gave it a good thorough hand and power wash and about 90% of it washed away. You can still feel it when you run your hand across the paint. Good enough until I get it professionally done and other parts painted.

Thanks for the replies.

This happened to me a few years ago. I thought the body shop was insane when they said lacquer thinner, but they assured me. I was completely flabbergasted. The result was 100% removal with zero issues whatsoever. Sounds crazy but it works.

Get the same paint and spray bomb your co-workers faces….

I’m being totally sarcastic of course….

However, on the real side of things, are your co-workers going to pay you for the detail corrections since they were the cause of the problem?
