Shell Helix 5w30 AF. Once a year oil change. Don't let anyone else tell you anything different.

Ignore the oil life indicator. I'm convinced it's using some really stupid data / safety factors. If you are worried, get your oil lab tested after one year. I guarantee you it will still be good enough to go for another year. It's about £35 to £40 to ha e it tested.

Hi. No it definitely was, I made sure when picked it up after service, it's been reset each time after oil change.

I suspect it's the type of commute start stop particularly in mornings that is deteriorating the life of oil so quickly and have been advised to use an engine flush at next service and potentially even using 0w20 oil!

And no that advice is not from a spammy website but a reputable oil supplier who knows about mustangs.
Hopefully this adds some clarity :like:

I’ve posted this before, here it is again for those who maybe have never seen it regarding OLM operation and how it functions, per the shop manual:

The timer also counts down as the car sits. So for those wondering why their Oil Life Monitor is saying you need an oil change when you have only driven 500 miles since last oil change BUT the car has been in the garage for 6 months consecutively... The above is your answer.

i wonder if 5w-30 in my 17GT would be a good idea after the timing gear change, since the sump and coolant etc are all getting dropped..

I really am quite intrigued by this. So many different views and looks like vast majority of Mustang owners prefer 5w30 even for the older s550 models. I can see the logic why.

Yet, speaking to someone in the car engine oil trade, they advise 5w30 only required if heavily modified, burning a lot of oil or in a hot climate. 5w20 is ok but in UK sold only for ecoboost engines and if you want to upgrade go for 0w20.

I know it's nit picking and any would be fine but the different views are interesting.

It doesn't really matter.

Here's the thing. Plenty of people are using 5W-20, 5W-30, and 5W-50 without issue. Hell, people are using other oils like 0W-40.

Ford has speced all 3 of those 5W weight oils in the manuals. Exact same engine in a "Track Pack" car as the regular GT. Some people will tell you the lighter oil is so the VCT will work properly, while other people will tell you that's the reason to run the heavier weight oil.

Tests can tell you that the Motorcraft 5W-50 is closer to a 30W. Ford went to 5W-20 for fuel economy reasons. Not that you're going to gain mpg using it, but across hundreds of thousands of cars...

There's not a lot you can really prove or disprove. You'd have to take a couple new motors, fill them with whatever oil, run them for so many miles, tear them down and inspect them.

The most important thing is to run a synthetic and change it regularly (cue the debate on how many miles you should run the oil before you change it...)

I can understand they went 5w20 for fuel economy, but why then did they change to 5w30 for the newer models?

Started running 5W30 in mine about 3k ago. The only difference I have noticed is that it is very slightly quieter, oil pressure runs about 5lbs. higher at hot idle, and it carries about 10lbs. more oil pressure at anything above 2K rpm.
The difference between 5W20 and 5W30 is not a huge jump in viscosity. Although I mention pressure above, keep in mind that flow is just as, if not more so, important.
In my estimation switching to 5W30 is a good idea. The largest drawback may be a slight decrease in fuel economy. Just made a 1500 mile round trip with my wife (this means that there was far more stuff taken with us than I would have taken if it was just me) and the mileage lie-o-meter said that it got 24.5mpg.

Remember that the HP and MPG difference between 5-30 and 5-20 is so tiny, you'd never notice it

engine masters ran two very different thickness oils and there wasn't much difference at all. Maybe 1%
