All,
I have the plastic pan/ yellow plug Gen 3 5.0L coyote engine in my Mustang GT. From what I gather, it says it takes 10 quarts of oil but when I fill it with 10qts, it only goes up to 1/2 between the marks when cold and it has sat for a long time.

I always change my filter as well.

When they claim 10qts, does that include the volume in the filter or is that not including the filter change?

I have also seen some material on the magnet of the UPR plug. Should I be worried or , with about 8K miles, it is still too soon to worry?

The car has only seen ford free oil changes and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

Thanks for the feedback and piece of mind.

That is normal. I always have to add more than 10 quarts.
Also - if you keep drain plug out and remove the filter, some more oil always comes out of the drain plug.

Normal. The manual actually specifically states that if the oil is in the middle of the hash marks then you should not add oil, so that's been accounted for.

Thanks for the piece of mind.

What about some metal on the magnet?

Regarding metals on drain plugs, I make notes of such things in my maintenance book. But an observation like this isn't very worthwhile by itself. Mechanical components are going to wear and shed materials.

My truck has factory magnetic plugs and I've always witnessed some very, very fine particles associated with some components (while never having an issue, ever).

Several members perform engine oil analysis; this is the better route. Analysis will provide you measured data of what you are seeing. You can then compare these measurements against a standard over time.

Is your car level when you change the oil? Most of the time I change my oil in my garage with the car jacked fairly high in the front (so I can get underneath). In this case when measuring what comes out, it's almost 11 quarts. So... I fill to middle of hash and it's always 10+ quarts (with filter change). Net/Net I guess exaggerating the angle of the engine drains a bit more then if you changed the oil while the car is level. Just don't over fill!!

I have only ever changed my own oil on my 19gt since I've owned it and always put 10.5 qts to get the oil to just at the top of the hash marks. I'm just ocd anywhere in the middle is fine

I’m a new GT owner and have been wondering about this, if it’s in the “range” it is good to go.

NEVER count on the dipstick to be accurate. Do a proper change, filter and recommended amount of oil, run it, let it sit and check. That's your full mark. Mark it with a sharpie or a blade or something, but that's your full mark.

Overfilling can be as dangerous as underfilling. You're probably fine, but overfilling is not a good practice.
