Likely because sandwiching the ground wire between a non conductive painted surface on the car and a non conductive black anodized finish on the catch can does not make for a found ground connection.

Doesn't need to be fast, just need to be up temperature.

PJ that is possible but the car is still standing in a closed garage like before and while temperature is lower than in summer it is still above 15C.
