I notice the unit checks the USB drive when it's plugged it, is there a way to make it auto flash the update.img?

There's kinda but we need TWRP. I don't know if possible with stock recovery. I know a unit used to but you had to put the update.zip and not the update.img

I assume the unit needs to boot for it to recognize steering wheel controls. If not, maybe try holding the volume down, then giving power to the unit.

I had a Galaxy S3 that had no power button. To get it to work, I had to remove the battery, hold the volume down button, then plug the power in. It would boot into recovery and I would tell the unit to restart, this would get the phone to boot and work until it froze up.
