Doing some 'net reading, the BG keeps coming up as a better alternative than the Amsoil. Grimace, would you recommend using it with the XL-18 additive, or stand alone?

FWIW, My notchy shifts are really not that bad. I'm just anal about it being a new car and if I can improve it, I'm going to do my best.

I don't recommend using the XL-18 additive in anything other than factory fluid and when recommended by your dealer's service department. Since the additive was originally implemented by Ford I can't really say how it should be used other than what Ford recommends.

If you choose a different fluid like BG or Amsoil use it by itself with no additives.

Amsoil makes quality products but I don't have any personal experience with them, certainly not enough to compare them to the BG fluid I recommend.

For mild issues with shift quality it's a good idea to swap the fluid on your own. If you really had bad shifting issues I would advise against working on it yourself and get the repairs covered under warranty. Contact Deysha from Ford Customer Service right here on the forum if your local dealer gives you any trouble.

BG and Amsoil MTL are both Sychromesh fluids. There are about a half dozen of them. BG and Amsoil are both often highly regarded and recommended.

Royal Purple has one, but not as recommended as the others. Chrysler has a non-syntheic base stock version of it too which is very good but requires more frequent changes. The Redline fluid is more different than these others and has a higher cST IIRC.

Between BG and Amsoil pick whatever one you can get easier (time/effort/cost). They both achieve similar/same results.

I agree not to use any additives. Those were developed to overcome deficiencies in the fluid they are added to.

I am in Florida and although "cold" mornings here are in the high 60's and low 70's daily, I experience the notchy-ness often during DD. If I start driving aggressive for a good 5-10 minutes all notchy feelings go away. If I drive regular throughout my morning commute it takes a WHILE before the shifts feel smooth.

Given most of the time here is above 75 degrees, what should I go with? I am torn between Amsoil Synchromesh 5w30 or the BG Synchroshift II.

Doing all the reading here, I'm leaning towards the BG. Mine really doesn't seem to have this issue above 50 degrees in the morning.

I can say I wouldn't use redline if you are in warmer climates. Both times when I used redline and it started to break down the notchiness was worst on hot days above 90F. Redline was great for a while but seemed to break down. BG synchroshift II has been great for me in NC. 40-110F, no issues. 20-40F it takes a little warming up, and a week ago when we hit a record of 4F the tranny wouldn't budge until it sat and warmed up 10min. There is only so much the oil can do!

These two fluids perform nearly identical to each other. Both are very popular and highly recommended.

Pick whatever one that is easier for you to get.
