The aftermarket is filled with cool wheels. Some last forever, some crack in your driveway. Why? Our very own, Alan Peltier, explains.

Wrench smarter. Introducing a NEW series on /DRIVE, aimed at educating you to build a faster, better, more reliable car: /ENGINEERED. We want to empower our fellow enthusiasts to know more, and do more, by learning from some of the best engineers in the game.

Awesome video!

I can attest to the engineering behind the HRE Flow Form wheels we have on multiple cars at BMR Suspension.

Over the years we have used many different wheels that are touted as being "the best" - that had price tags that just do not make sense after our experience with the HRE components.

We have no problem sharing our opinion with the public; our HRE wheels are the best wheels we have ever used. We have used most of the popular brands available.

great video.. as an engineer myself he does a great job explaining some of the strength factors like the grain sizes and the brittle vs ductility of the metals.

This thread made me want to install Solidworks again and have a look at the wheels I was designing years ago. They were for the car I had at the time, a 1974 Toyota Celica, 1100kg. The wheels were 4-bolt 13x6.

I ended up with a wheel that is 9.6lb (for a 13x6 remember). I arrived at this after tinkering with the stress analysis. The attached analysis is with the wheel under the simultaneous strain of:

1000kg static weight
1000kg @ 1G cornering force
1000kg @ 1G braking force

This current wheel does yield under that strain, but its close to keeping it all under control. I think if you've got 90% of the car's weight on one wheel, and cornering at 1G AND braking at 1G, then you have bigger problems than the wheel bending. In the car it was designed for, at any rate.

It is a fun thing to do, and while I think my design and testing are accurate, I know enough to know there's likely amateur techniques and flaws in there, and I'd like to learn more about how the manufacturers are designing and testing (virtual testing) wheels.

Greg, fantastic video! We've had the great opportunity to run HRE on our cars and honestly, we couldn't be happier with the quality. Even during the process of optional powdercoatings, one little flaw and we'd get a call, "its not perfect, therefore, its not going out".
Thanks again for that video!

Great video. Super expensive wheels. Quality costs money. :(
Nothing new there, quality has almost always cost money. That's why there are so many replica's out there of popular designs. Sometimes the price is justified while other times it is just inflation due to the name. Mostly it's a combination of both. You pay for the quality and then a little more for the name. This goes for any company though.

Quality goes a long way and lasts a long, long time! I like to buy Johnston and Murphy shoes, some of their cap toes, I pay $400 for but guess what? Even after 10+ years, they look brand new. Money well spent in my book:D
