I see a lot of you adding super chargers but has anyone done nitrous? I don't really know anything about it but am interested due to it being cheaper than a SC. Are there any downsides to it or risks? Is it worth it? Hard to set up? Any info is appreciated

there are so many things that can go wrong with NOS. IMO only get it if you plan on street racing for some cold hard dough

Nitrous is awesome and I recommend it, but this is not the right place to ask. The 5.0 technical section will get you better results.

Yeah I'm a huge fan of the juice man... Lots of things that can go wrong with any type of power adder but you can turn nitrous on/off, can't turn a turbo or sSC on/off when needed...

Take a look at the various Ford and Nitrous specific forums, lots of flames fly when discussing laughing gas

Nitrous was ruined by the fast and furious movies. No it doesn't blow your car up, and its not illegal. Nitrous is the best power adder IMO. It creates the most torque, and doesn't suffer from heat soak. The 5.0 does very well on a 150 shot. Check out the American muscle vids on youtube of them hitting 10s with nitrous and a tune on the new GT.

How hard of an install is it? What kind of maintenance is required?

It's so easy to install. You can get kits all over the internet that come with a window switch and everything you need. I ran a 100 shot on my 2011 and installed it in about 2 hours.

For one, I wouldnt take any advice from anyone calling it "NOS"
Typically installs are quick, just be sure to run some colder plugs and be sure to get the tune dialed in. Nitrous is fantastic! A 100shot will net you around 85whp with about 150wtq

I been running nitrous for over 20 years from simple street systems
to all out heads up 3 stage pro mod stuff. The kits they sell for the 5.0
are slick and easy to install plus they are cheap compared to a blower or
other power adder . Buddy of mine ran high 10s w his 2015 on a 150 shot!

The limiting factor with Nitrous is the pistons, stock 5.0s
sadly do not come with forged pistons and 150jet is as far as I would
push any cast piston. If had a built motor and could get a 250 shot in your DD
it would really kick some ass

I see the downside to nitrous is having to pull timing. So to be more convenient id probably keep the nitrous tune at all times to avoid switching tunes back and forth. This would cause power loss while not using the nitrous and driving normally. A friend mentioned there is a black box(not sure the name) for camaro that gives the ability to switch tunes at the push of a button. Is there anything like this for the mustang?

Please note, I am not a tuner, nor have I ever said I was, but I ran.m a 150 shot on a hemi, with stock Pistons. Ran probably 10-15 bottles through it before i got rear ended at a stop light and it was totaled. I never adjusted timing for the nitrous. Now it was a hemi and not a coyote, but I would think you can get away without messing with the timing. Again this is just my opinion, and I would ask a tuner to verify. But I would not hesitate in my own car to spray a 150 shot.

The biggest downfall to nitrous is the size of the bottle. And every use after the first one starts to loose power. The pressure drop pass after pass starts to really pick up after a couple passes. And if you can't maintain pressure you cannot maintain a true power level. Ok sure you can hear the bottle and get your pressure back I know that. But what I'm talking about is if you start your first pass at 1000psi and end at say 950. That's fairly consistent. Pass 5 you may start at 1000 but at the end of the run be sitting at 750. That's a huge drop, and a loss of power. So if you make a bunch of passes. Plan on getting several bottles to take to the track.

What does nitrous cost now days? It's been about 6-7 years since my last bottle fill, and it was 2.50-4.00 a pound (depending on where you got it) so that's $25-40 a bottle. I would only run 4-5 passes a bottle before I would call it spent. Then it's in to the freezer, and rush to get it filled. It really was a pain in the ass. But it's oh so much fun. And the cheapest HP you can buy. (That is if you want a serious increase in power)

A few basic must haves w nitrous...
Consistent bottle pressure, always needs to be 950 every pass, can be done w heating elements or bottle baths at the track.
Bottles need to be full,a typical 10# bottle when filled should scale to 23-23.5 pounds and never over 24,after every run you will loose weight and pressure
Bottles can be re warmed up to regain pressure but really if they get down to 19 lbs they are
ready to be put aside for refilling. They dont make much power down that light
and your tune will go fat and you risk not only going slow but killing a piston
The bigger the tune the more this is an issue, pressure drop kills .

Nitrous needs timing retard to make an engine live and a colder plug as well
If your kit (JMS,Nitrous express etc) has some way to do that w factory computer,
I alsways did it with the MSD ignition on our race cars,I figure the SCT has tunes where you can electronically retard timing as soon as the niod sees power .

You can also buy 15 lb bottles which gives 50% more spray and should make it though
a night of ass kicking. At the races I had a stack of 10 bottles in the trailer and would
stab in 2 new bottles ever run,I sprayed 500 -600 shot every pass ,it was expensive
but I refilled my own bottles and still do ,a 75 lb mother bottle costs me 129.00

Nitrous has more torque than any power adder, your tires and suspension need to be
right or you will get nothing but tire smoke and risk hitting the rev limiter (bad idea)

Have you looked at those pressure assist kits? They seem interesting. But I didn't run on the bottle long enough to give it s try. Oh well. That's life.
