New Owner, a few questions!

Let's keep it civil in here. I know anytime catch cans are mentioned, it sparks a heated debate.

Welcome to the forum! Before I recommend any mods, what are your goals for the car? Is it a dd, an all-arounder, auto crosser, track car, drag car?

At 640 miles, you are good to start running it hard anytime. In my opinion, I'd say anytime after 500 miles.

Honestly, I'm not too sure what I want to do with the car quite yet. For sure it is a daily driver, so I don't want to go too crazy. Though eventually I really do want to get into some of that stuff (Again, while staying a dd). So possibly a dd-all arounder, if that's a thing? Taking it to do any of those things sounds like it would be a fun and neat experience! Like I mentioned previously (i think), I have absolutely 0 experience working with cars, so I'm afraid to do anything really. I just have gotten some small cosmetic "mods" so far.

I have recently gotten some products so I can start washing/detailing my car instead of taking it to the car wash, like my previous vehicle. So hopefully I did okay with the products I got. I really only got the essentials so far.

I'm extremely happy I found this place though, I'll definitely be around! I just hope everyone is okay with such a "Newbie" haha. We all gotta start somewhere I guess!

Keep up with what you're doing on the break in till 1,000 miles. Easy driving, vary the RPM's, no full throttle and let everything warm up fully before getting on it at all. I've never liked the look of caliper covers. A lot of folks have had nice results with G2 brake caliper paint kit. Congrats on your new ride!

Do not get a catch can, useless and can introduce problems where a problem doesn't exist. If you install a catch can and it causes a problem you will be on the hook for the damage.

Going in 4 years without a catch can and no problems.

Void your warranty at your own risk.

It takes three seconds to take it off if you are worried that the dealer will see it.
Also, how would a catch can void your warranty?

Whatever you do please do not put caliper covers on your car.

Agreed. If you have to ask, you probably know the answer. Nothing screams poser more than caliper covers, GT or Cobra badges on non GT or Shelby cars, and replica GT350R wings. LESS IS MORE! Focus and think things through on what they're going to accomplish for you. And please please please do not get new sway bars because someone pulling out of Starbucks claims to have experienced better handling.

It's all good. If you plan to start working on your car, get a few tools and a toolbox. Start with the easier stuff first like changing oil and filters.
As far as mods are concerned, the best thing you can do is drive your car now before any mods. Establish a baseline if you will. Get comfortable with the car using its current power and handling characteristics then mod it to add on to whatever you think it's missing. A really good beginning mod for ecoboosts is putting premium(91 or 93) fuel in it. It's a nice power bump.

For someone wanting to start doing their own work on their car, I'd recommend the following:

3/8 ratchet and impact sockets(mix shallow and deep well)
1/2 ratchet and impact sockets(mix shallow and deep well)
3/8 to 1/2 impact adapter
1/2 to 3/8 impact adapter
3/8 or 1/2 Breaker bar
Multi-bit screwdriver set with philips, slotted, torx, etc bits
Pliers
Hammer
ramps
2 or 3 ton floor jack
2 or 3 ton jack stands
Oil pan(if you plan to do oil changes or change other fluids)

Extra stuff you don't need, but it's nice to have:

3/8 or 1/2 electric impact wrench
Jacking rails(Steeda or BMR)


I know I listed a lot of stuff and some of this stuff ain't cheap. I'd recommend Harbor Freight or a similar store for the best deals. Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or Offer Up are also good for tool deals.

Hey guys! I'm new here, how is everyone? Nice to meet you all.

I had a few questions I was hoping some people could help me out with, I'd appreciate it!

First off, breaking in period...I've heard so many different recommendations. I've been driving my car fairly gently, giving it some gas here and there but really haven't "floored" it. Before I try out 0-60 times, gassing it more, etc..how many miles should I hit? I'm guessing about 1k? I'm currently at about 640!

Breaking in the the car is usually for the entire car, not just the engine. The engine itself, in my opinion of research done, doesn't necessarily need it. It's more important to make sure the oil temp is optimal. The 5.0 is a different breed, but an example is my own car. First engine I babied, had it swapped at a little over 1k for damaged camshaft. New engine I brought up to redline day one. I also did a couple of hard pulls and let it engine brake all the way back down. 3k miles on it, hasn't burned a drop (or at least any perceivable amount) of oil, runs just fine.

However, the shifting in my transmission didn't start to feel smooth until about 2k total miles, so going back to it being for the whole car.

There's nothing wrong with being gentle, if that's what you choose to do. However, there are temps the components will only see at high engine speeds and loads. Again, my opinion gathered from multiple opinions and research, is that introducing the engine to these temps is important to allow the components to go through all the heat cycles they will be exposed to. This is why some will say to break it in the way you intend to use it.

At the end of the day, just do what you're comfortable with. There's people who've had success and failures following any of the proposed philosophies.
