Got a line on 2 brand new Michelin 265/40/19 tires for about a quarter of the new new price
Catch is they were manufactured in 2016.
Any opinions on these?
I'm leaning towards getting them.
Michelins are good tires and I figure they'll be burnt off in a couple of years anyway.
My 2020,new to me, GT with the black PKG doesn't have Near enough rubber in back, like every other mustang I've owned......
Already scared the shit outta myself.
These will be on the front on 9x19 apex rims.
Rear will be 19x10 with 285/40/19.
No tracking, just need a little/lot more grip.
I Like the 40 sidewalls for ride comfort.
Also trying to get away without lowering it because of the annoying fender gap.
Yeah. I'm old. If you play your cards right, you may be old one day, too........

About 6-7 years is really end of life for tires that you plan to drive on. Your saying a “couple of years” of use puts you way past that.

You didn’t say what model of tire, if your looking at a performance summer tire I would definitely pass.

From internet.

If not used, tires last for 6-10 years, depending on the storage and environmental conditions. Overall, the time limits for stored tires are much the same as for tires that are being used. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and official manufacturers suggest a tire is only 100% safe to use until it turns 5-6 years old. However, some admit that a tire can be operable up to 10 years if you check it for issues annually after the 5th year.

If 1/4 the price, maybe. I'd be more concerned about different type tires front/back vs just age.

I bought some 305/35/19s off of a GT350 that were manufactured in 2016. They had 6/32nds still on them, they come with 8/32nds. They were done, if the temps dropped below 60deg F they wouldn't stick even if they were made of velcro. Bought some new when they were finally made available again and it was a huge difference.

If you are just going to putz in them and they are just there to get you by, I would go for it. If you want to have fun with the car I would pass.

I don't putz Sir. Your mama putzes.
But yeah. Gonna get em.
One thing I'm NOT gonna do is pay $350+ per tire.
That's crazy.

On a side note. Someone mentioned mixing tires.
What about piolet super sports on the back, because they go to 285/40. Actually saw some 295/40's on eBay. Tire rack does not carry them though, so no idea on the specs.
And ps4s on the front.
Would that cause any weird handling issues?
Just curious. Probably gonna go with super sports all around.

supersports are end-of-life. I mix tires all the time. Obviously not left/right but fore/aft.
Join USAA and get your Goodyears for 20-30% off. I don't pay $350 each either - a little over 200 for Supercar 3's.

Hello; I get the recommendations are a tire is done after 6 to 7 years. I have run tires for over ten years several times. I rotate every 3000 to 5000 miles and have a good look see. As I got older and retired I do not put on so many miles any more.
My experience tells me you can use older tires. As some other have stated, perhaps not on a track.
My experience may go against the grain but there it is. The old tires do get harder a bit after ten years so. I have a set on my Sentra about 12 to 13 years old with something over 60,000 miles I do plan to replace them soon. They are Firestones and wanted to get some Cooper tires to replace them. The shop I use could not get any Coopers in my size some weeks ago. I will check again next week. Coopers are among the last American owned and made tires is what I understand.

Really depends on the quality of the tire and the intended use. Will an old set of new Michelin's perform better than a new set of generic "performance" tire? Probably.

If the price is right and they were stored correct (which is very important) I would use them as long as I wasn't trying to bury the speedo or hit the track. Tirerack frequently sells new old stock at deep discounts and they seem to fly off the shelf pretty quick.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
I think It'll be okay.
I feel the same way. Good quality older tires like Michelins, I trust more than new crap brands.
I drive for a living, so NO triple digits for me.
What I like is getting to the posted speed limit as FAST as I possibly can.
However, when the ass kicks out at the top of, 3rd maybe?, at around 65, that gets my attention in a bad way. I did NOT see that coming!
This is my first Coyote motor, I just sold an 05 premium 4.6 auto with a few bolt on's.
No comparison......
This thing demands respect.
The guy I bought the 05 from was the original owner, another guy my age. First thing he'd do when he got in was switch off traction control.
He's had a 2020 A10 GT for about a year now.
He told me he will NOT be switching it off on this one.
Me either......

I would absolutely pass and get some cheaper NEW tires, like Firestones or Continentals, or find some recent takeoffs here on the forum classifieds from someone who just got a car and wants to uograde to wider wheels.

With tires that old they’re borderline IF you are absolutely certain they were stored properly. So do you know how these were actually stored over the last 6 years?

When Paul Walker died, the 9 year old tires were listed as a cause. I assume you want Michellin summer tires because they grip, well 6 year old tires you can throw that out the window.
