Hi all,

Like some I am building a fun ~1000w (solid 950w) street/drag car. Car started life as a P1X pump gas machine with headers and little mods here and there, and as time has progressed I installed a built T56 Magnum XL from American Powertrain, went to a D1x, and added a fuel system for E85.

As eager as I was to start slapping gears I admit, NOT a fan of the T56; it's noisy, it shakes (my MGW shakes + knob makes noise), and it heats up quickly. And this was after the proper measuring to make sure I was within spec. Nevertheless, I lived with it for 18-months but fast-forward a couple months ago I added in a new Spec Super Twin along with an looked over T56 (sent it out) and my new RPG 5.2L. :) Oh yeah!

Well... it hasn't been all sunshine with this setup so I am hoping some can help me diagnose. Maybe I am anal, but since my first start, I've noticed an uptick in vibration: engine/transmission vibration particularly. I do run BMR's poly mounts but before others say "that's your issue" it's not, I already played the engine mount game and it's far worse with stock units. Now the odd thing is the vibration comes and goes. Drive down the street or idling at a light and I think to myself "damn if finally smoothed out" but then the next light it doesn't... I tired to use my SCT to do a crank relearn but it errors out (not sure why), so I use an older HPT device and software to complete the task and it makes little to no difference. I have received a 'random misfire code' and it started to backfire on shifts/decel till one day it finally told me a cylinder (#3), which crazy enough turned out that the coil was arcing between the coil and boot - coil side was charred up and the lead was bent; these were new.

Nevertheless, I swapped back to an old set of coils thinking "YES" finally got it. But... no. Car runs pretty much the same and when I check to see if there's codes it has a "permanent" miss code P0303/P0300, last I checked but no engine light. Well with beating my head my tuner asked for a WOT log since he can't see anything within past logs, and oddly enough, ZERO knock, good timing, and nothing within the log jumps out at me. Obviously, I am no tuner, but hopefully it all checks out. But if it does, what can cause vibration? I am leaning towards cam phasers / VCT's since I do hear a little noise by the passenger head (video below; I removed the belt off the crank and here the engine is running smooth). Am I crazy to think this? Aside from the cams, phasers and VCT everything is new. Car has 54k miles.

Out side of the box, would a poorly balanced clutch do this? Like, I am quite positive I aligned the marks up but the mid-plate I don't recall that having any markings so I just put it in. Would that have enough to make everything vibrate? Oh, and my MGW shifter had higher than usual vibrations during that WOT log.

Any help is appreciated, please throw out some ideas of things I should look into.

Thanks,
Kenneth Kell

Noise: Beginning of video at front of engine & between the head and blower - again, belt is off blower
