New battery now have odd smell?

Replaced oem factory battery with oem ford battery. After driving the car and its sitting cooling off get a smell coming from it. Had oil change recently and dealership saw no leaks(smell only after new battery). No codes. Dealership said battery was tight with connections. I performanced bms reset after install. Anyone experience this or what could this be? Bad battery from dealership? Thanks in advance!

Automotive lead acid batteries will gas off hydrogen, a byproduct of the chemical reactions taking place inside the case. This could be what you're smelling. I'd expect these odors to fade over time, as the battery approaches a fully-charged state.

Batteries sit in stock, sometimes for months, before being placed in a vehicle. On the top of the OEM battery case is a date stamp, the date of manufacture. It's in a DD/MM/YY format.

Dealers and vendors should be keeping their battery stocks fresh. While something several months old is not uncommon, I'd be concerned if receiving a battery whose date of manufacture was approaching a year. You're paying for a product with an expected service life, little of which should be spent while on the shelf.

If you're comfortable with the build date of the battery, I'd continue to monitor but otherwise leave as-is.

- Occasionally take a look at the charging voltage while driving; it should stay at 14.5V almost all the time

- Remove the under hood battery rain cover and inspect the top of the battery. While a light amount of residue from the case caps can occur, excessive amounts can indicate overcharging

- Check the cables for corrosion two to three times a year. While there, ensure the case enclosure is not holding water, which can happen when the drain in the bottom of the enclosure is plugged with debris

Thats battery is four years old already, tell them to replace it because it's only a matter of time before it stop playing. Depending on where you live 4-5 years is about all you are going to get out of a battery, sounds like you have a cell going bad

Smells like a burning smell. Goes away in like 2 minutes after turning off. Battery is not bubbling or anything looks wrong with it. Would need to get battery out to see that date stamped on it. There is a sticker on it stating 8/25 on it.

That’s likely a serial number as it says above. Many could have been made on that date so must be a unique serial number not a date.

I’m betting it’s not battery related as in the battery itself - perhaps more likely something else happened elsewhere during fitment ?

I think it is reducing with me trips but has not been out much with it barely being spring here in MN. Is this normal behavior for a new battery?

For a battery to smell , a burning smell as you stated , it's not normal. Just for you own piece of mind , go back to the Dealership and have them recheck it ,or tell them your very uncomfortable and would appreciate a replacement.

It looks like with new packaging, Ford has changed how it presents the date of manufacture code. From the following examples, Ford now places a MM/YY sticker on the side of the case.

Agree. I'd return to the dealer to discuss the smell again. Could be a battery problem. Maybe it is also a coincidence with another event. That, during that time, you picked up some road debris, like a plastic bag or something that's now melting on the exhaust. But yes, check it out. Put the car on a lift and inspect the underside, the exhaust end-to-end.

Recent oil change...Something could be loose (not lose ). But they might have also been less attentive when removing the filter. Dripped oil they didn't wipe up. Over time, that would have been blown back towards the engine and exhaust.

That battery was made on a Thursday so it's no good only things made on Tuesday and Wednesdays, because the Hong over on Monday from the weekend and thinking about Friday on Thursday
