So I have been researching what will be the best way to upgrade the sound in the 5.0.

Been researching different LOC's/Signal Processors/Sub's.

One thing I certainly do not want is a big sub box sitting in the trunk.

I like good clean sound and some bass but it does not have to be so loud that the car next to me can hear it.

Anyways, I came across this device from Rockford Fosgate, the DSR-1.

I guess it's not out yet but will be soon.

What caught my eye is the caption from the Description:

"The DSR1 is the first real solution for replacing the factory amplifier and speakers in Ford and Chrysler vehicles, as the DSR1 uses the full-range, flat audio signal from the factory source unit."

Definitely looks interesting.

I will be keeping my eye out for this when it comes out.

What do you guys think?

It might be a good device/bridge to installing aftermarket speakers and amps.

Seems like I read about this somewhere else and it said it was only compatible with the Ford/Sony/Sync combo like the Expedition has... if that's not the case, this will be a welcome product!

Yea, i am hoping this device will work and be compatible with the Base Sync system all the way up to the Sync 3.

+This looks perfect.

"When used in late model Ford and Chrysler vehicles, the DSR-1 can be installed with one of three plug-and-play harnesses available at launch."

Sounds like it will work with all the different systems. with three different harnesses available. It is supposed to launch shortly and seems to have everything I need:
1. Plug and play harness
2. DSP - easily tuneable with an app.
3. 8 channel output
4. Flat output direct from HU
5. $250 retail price?!?!

I know the Explorers have a Sony system, but I would think if anything in the S550 was made by Sony, it would be advertised as such like it is in the Explorer.
