Hi,

I bought a used (20k miles) 2018 GT convertible last year, and immediately noticed an issue with the car. The car has ca. 23k miles now.

I tried searching the forums but couldn't find a thread dealing with a similar issue, so here's the description:

Scenario 1: Driving at 50-70mph with the cruise control on on the highway, a slight hill/incline on the road and the car needs to use a bit of torque. RPMs jump 100-200, no gear change, and when the RPMs go back to the original figure, the whole car shakes/vibrates very noticeably. D/S mode, doesn't matter. By ear it's coming from the rear, shifter doesn't shake (gearbox bushings should be okay).

Scenario 2: Driving at a steady speed and pressing just a little bit of the accelerator, RPMs go slightly up but gear doesn't change. Once the RPMs come down a bit, the car shakes/vibrates noticeably. By ear it's coming from the rear, shifter doesn't shake (gearbox bushings should be okay).

Had the car's 10R80 gearbox checked at the local Ford dealership and no issues with error codes/fluid levels/fluid quality. No misfiring shown on the tests either. The car drives perfectly other than the really annoying and strong shake/vibration. According to Ford, it's a "feature" and not at problem, carry on driving - they said. I don't think they checked the rear, though, but checked only the misfiring and gearbox. Did resets etc, not help.

I've now taken it to a smaller garage to check the driveshaft, bushings etc., but just received the initial call with no apparent reason for it. They will continue searching tomorrow. No shaking while fully accelerating or cruising with steady RPMs, so I've ruled out wheels/tires.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

I only have the V6 so I'm not sure if this applies to the GT, But one thing you might want to check, if you open up the fender well / splash shield over the right front tire, behind the wheel there is this large 'counter balance' in the fender cavity. It's a large weight that may have gotten stuck (and not in it's balanced position? or dislodged?). I would check it since you have vibration. I could not find it on Ford parts, etc.

Sounds like torque convertor clutches chattering from how you've described.
