I just found out that the S550 is using the same manual transmission that is in the S197. The MT82.

I've heard the MT82 is not reliable with anything over 500HP, lots of S197 owners complaining that the tranny is on borrowed time once you get over the 500 HP thresh hold.

Has Ford made any improvements to the transmission since the S197?

Some recent 2015 owners have reported shifting difficulties between first and second gear, especially on "Cold" shifts (when the vehicle is not warmed up and the viscosity of the gearbox fluid is at its thickest prior to warm up) as well as some "Nibbling" of the gears between shifts. This seems to be a random problem as some owners like myself have had zero problems with their Getrag gearbox to date. The old TSB for the MT82 Gearbox called for the removal of the original Gearbox lube and replacing it with Dual Clutch fluid and a Ford product called "XL-18 additive" (a friction enhancer) that is now incorporated into all MT82 transmissions. As far as improvements, might is suggest you go a google search into "Ford MT82 transmission TSB's" and you'll see there were some improvements to the MT82 system overall. :first:

The MT-82 is a actually a good transmission that has a bad rep due to low QC on parts on the old unit used in 11-14.

Also because it uses a remote mounted shifter with rubber bushings to isolate NVH from the trans to the cabin and that lead to some grinding and gear lockout (or so I read). MGW shifter should address this.

Rumor is internals have been beefed up for 15+. Who knows what all was changed. I don't think anyone has torn one down yet.

The old MT-82 was able to handle 600lb/tq pretty easily.

If you get a good MT-82 you should have no problems with it in the power department assuming you address the remote mounted shifter and don't mind a little NVH.

I had 33k miles on mine at 585 rwhp on my 11 (tvs) without a single issue

I'm not saying they are great, but just a few issues, compounded by Internet and the ability to scream and holler all over message boards, usually make a problem appear much larger than it really is. 25,000 happy owners don't rave like 10 who had a problem.

Thanks alot I'll look into that.

very well laid out post! Hopefully someone does do a tear down, would like to see what all / If anything was changed, other than the fluid.

I agree, the few do scream louder than the majority. But, I've seen enough people raging on different forums, pages and club meets, it's something to at least keep tabs on.

My trans is loud shifting between gear and whines like a pro charger in 1-4... 5th is nice and quite at all times. I plan to take it to the dealer on Thursday.

One thing I know, is that the versions of the MT-82 in the S197 had a lot of synchronizer drag (one of the major reasons for the 2011 to mid-2012 Mustang's 2nd gear grinding/clunky shift feel and still an issue after, but mainly cold). The interface of the synchronizer faces has supposedly been re-engineered for 2015 to reduce the amount of synchronizer drag, mainly on the 2nd gear. I've take the S197 version apart before...

The 2015 shift is also an improvement, but still one that isn't that phenomenal.

The 2011 to mid-2012 MT-82 transmission were the absolute worst.
