I have an aftermarket aluminum hood to install on my 2019 Mustang GT in Magnetic Metallic (J7). I took it to a body shop whose color camera card spray was too blue and their factory paint chip was too light. They said J7 is one of the hardest colors to match and even the temperature can change the color when it’s sprayed, so they want to paint the hood AND fade the new color on both fenders so it won’t stand out. But if they blend the fenders, I won’t be able to reinstall the stock hood unless they repaint the stock hood to match the blended fenders.

Long story short, I’m considering just doing the aftermarket hood in matte black. I’ve seen matte black hoods on light colored mustangs, but never a magnetic metallic and I’m concerned the colors won’t contrast enough. Thoughts?

Here is the primed hood I want to install:

Personally I would find a body shop that can properly match the Magnetic Metallic. Then carry the same stripes you have on the factory hood now down the middle of the new hood (minus the section the vents occupy of course).

If your going matte black I would wrap it. If you don't like you're out a few hundred dollars and can then paint. Painting a single body panel and getting a perfect match is quite tough, borderline impossible depending (I worked in a paint/body shop for years). Blending will be required and is normal.

I thought about wrapping it, but with the steep transitions and curves around and between all the vents, I wasn’t sure how well it would hold up. Also, I wonder how well racing stripes stick to wraps? (I’ve only applied them directly to paint)

a good wrapper can get it done for you.

I don't have an answer on the looks of it wrapped black, but I can tell you that the paint can be pretty reasonably matched. Here is mine after paint. One thing you might want to look into first and foremost is the edges of the hood around the extractor holes. Mine was terrible looking, with scrapes and scratches. It required massaging by the body shop to not look so crappy.

Magnetic can be matched by a good painter. I have a guy who does all my cars and friends as well. Had my rear spoiler done and I think it is a perfect a match as one could ask for. He also fixed a dent in my front bumper where some idiot hit me in a parking lot and if not for knowing where the damage was I cannot see new vs original paint.

Dude, your car is seriously nice the way it is. Really. Sorry, just had to say it. As time goes on, very soon there will be few left that nice. I have a “thing” for magnetic S550’s.

I love it the way it is too! Unfortunately with the supercharger on E85, it gets too hot in the summer. But I plan on keeping the stock hood so I can reinstall it when I want (just not in June, July or August)

The Napa color match was a bit more brown than the factory paint. 😢 However, because of the lines and angles, you have to stand at just the right spot to get the exact same lighting and angle between the factory panels and the new hood. (Which I tried to do in the attached image to show the difference) But I think it is close enough for now. I might consider wrapping it in the future depending on how much it bugs me.

One added bonus to the additional ventilation - I can REALLY hear the supercharger spin now!

Looks great! I finally got mine all back together as well. I had the heat extractors hydro dipped carbon fiber look.

Looks like they turned out nice. What does that hood weigh compared to the factory hood? Is it any lighter?

I *believe* it was a few pounds lighter BEFORE installing all the vents and hardware. But after installing everything it feels a little heavier.
