Did you get used to the whole manual thing within the hour or were you still a little iffy when you got the mustang? I wonder how long it will take me to actually feel comfortable driving a stick

I was a little iffy still but it helped significantly! I took it up the canyons on the third day of owning it haha. The only thing that is challenging is first gear. This car has creep assist so you just have to let go of the clutch little by little without giving gas and it will slowly move forward and that's when you add gas and let go of the clutch. It'll probably take you a week to get it down and about a month to smooth out the jerkiness.

How do you make it do "creep mode"? Nothing in the OM about it.
Let out clutch in first and don't give it any gas. It'll creep and never stall unless you hit the brakes.

Don't worry, no one will laugh at you when you stall it 14 times at the dealership.

Is it automatically on or is there a setting for it?

You can just coast in first gear without applying any clutch or throttle. It just keeps crawling and crawling and won't stall lol. I call it creep mode.

How good is the hill assist? I have a 2013 jeep JK 6spd with hill assist and I hated it, what a PITA it was! Finally disabled it and starting from a stop became much smoother.

Always clutch when you brake! Biggest thing to learn.
Get your seat in a position so you can comfortably push the clutch to the floor.
Learn the bite point on the clutch. This is where the clutch just starts to slow the engine down.

Slow is smooth.

the problem with this car isn't getting is rolling. its getting comfortable with the throttle. I've seen a lot of new stick drivers, and high power ones at that, ruin their cars because they were "comfortable" with moving it around. be careful with throttle application. I've seen plenty of people go sideways in 3rd and 4th. be humble.

You are going to stall it on a start and when coming to a stop when you forget to push in the clutch. Creep mode has been around along time, first became standard on windowless E series vans.

Rent a Manual car before buying one. I'd rent one for the day and get the concept down. Its fairly easy to learn just take it slow. YouTube it watching some videos might help.

Is it really a "creep mode", or is it just because of lots of torque from the V8 at idle RPM?

I second this and really really recommend it. Also bring along your friend who knows stick to at least give you tips, if not teach you outright.

We did this before we got my other half's first manual, and it worked out great. We rented a lemon yellow MR2. Most of the first day, we could barely get out of the parking lot we commandeered for the purpose. About ready for the street by the last third of that day. Second day, we had a blast cruising up and down the Pacific Coast Highway. (Slow car fast and all that.)

I agree that this car is a pretty easy manual to drive. Still, I wouldn't want to learn on my own $35k+ purchase!
