I'm in Florida and this winter we've been in 40 degree to 84 degree weather. The thud is there in in 40 or 84 degree temps.

Have you done an oil change to Trans? As in change to Amsoil/BG/RP?

This has been driving me crazy. I hear the thud and get some grinding or non-smooth gear shifts when city driving. I heard about the thud and gear shifting issues but what are the best recommended trans fluids to change to?

I know Paul he good experience with Royal Purple but anyone else have other good experiences?
Grimace427 on the forum here recommends BG Synchroshift II.

I will be going with this brand as he is a Mercedes mechanic, Mustang lover and good/honest guy.

Ryan1112, you cant bet money on this one because Ford service will notify dealer of your visit and put pressure on their end for a proper experience. Have you not involved Ford service and just done it on your own, then I would put money they would dismiss you with "normal" operation. If you involve Ford service prior to your visit, it nulls a "real life" experience. Ask me how I know this...

I'm betting that I'll get a better experience now. Since I probably won't be dismissed I'll hopefully be able to share some information on here.

FYI - not all dealerships treat their customers this way. It gets tiring reading that same line of crap, over and over and over.

Thought I would share that with other folks as well so they don't get the feeling that anytime they take their car in, it will be a futile effort.

There are a ton of great dealerships out there that have their best interest in the customers.

So I just made an appointment for Friday morning to go for a drive at the dealer to have them listen to it. I told them that if they need to keep it we can schedule a time for me to bring it back next week. I'll report back...

My car has both the thud and the rotational noise coming through the boot. The dealer compared it to a new car, which also makes those noises and said it was normal since the new one made them.

If every car shook you to death at 50mph I guess that would be considered normal too. :)

Who has the time to find them? The fact should be that ALL dealerships should have the customer in their best interest, not a handful from 100. Every car brand I have owned has had bad dealerships, until you find the right one, and at times, you may not find the right one at all. It's not crap if it happens more often than not.
Is it fair that the 3 dealerships within 25 miles from someone all have the same attitude and you'd have to drive 50+ miles for that stellar experience from that one great dealership? Or how about having to involve customer care or higher ups in order for them to begin treating you like they care? Yea, I agree that is a load of crap...
You'd hate to assume, but when proven right time after time, it gets easier to conclude to your higher odds. It's like saying there's no good people left in the world, chivalry is dead, etc, until someone comes along and proves your wrong. Doesn't negate the fact that the majority still holds true to being the negative. Until all dealerships act the same way, you'll keep hearing the same "line of crap", and it's well deserved.

guys the thud is completely normal.

How so? Of course if enough of an issue occurs, it becomes "normal". Doesn't negate the fact there is an issue.

Normal or not, imo, it is annoying as hell.

Going to be changing the trans fluid to BG Syncroshift II when I do my first oil change. Hopefully new fluid takes care of the thud as it did for areopaul.

My shifter rotational noise is annoying me even more that the thud is anymore. Dealers says it's normal. You can hear it loudest in second gear. Roll along about 30mph in second gear and pull the shifter slightly to the left. It makes this noise without pulling the shifter to the left but this amplifies the noise so you know what I mean. Mine is pretty darn loud. Try it and let me know if any of you hear it.

So I took my car to Ford today. I described the thud to my service advisor and a transmission tech there. They both knew about this sound and have heard it in all the manual Mustangs, especially those equipped with performance packs due to the gearing (Not sure if they meant all Mustangs or just GTs). They said it was the synchronizers in the transmission making the sound which will be most pronounced from 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. They mentioned that I might also hear it when stopped with the clutch out, then pushing the clutch in and putting it into first. Also, I only have 500 miles on mine. They said that this seems to get a little better with break in.

I had the transmission guy drive my car with me just to make sure it was the thud they were referring to, which it was. He was also able to make the thud not as pronounced or completely go away by double clutching or by pushing the shifter into gear slower which backs up the explanation of the synchronizers.

Although yes, as predicted I was told this is normal, I didn't feel like I was brushed off. I don't think this is an actual problem in that it is not harmful to our transmissions. I think it's just a sound that wasn't damped quite enough during design and the acoustical properties of the cabin are amplifying it. I even asked about changing to Amsoil Synchromesh since they are an Amsoil dealer. I was told that it might help some with the sound but if there is an issue with the transmission that they couldn't guarantee that Ford would warranty it.

Although I know this is not an acceptable answer to some because they find the sound to be annoying, it doesn't really bother me. I even joked with my service advisor that the problem will go away once I add an aftermarket exhaust. He laughed and said Borla can fix thuds, rattles, squeaks, and buzzes.
