lund tune and HP tuners device question.

I am about to pull the trigger on a flex tune from lund with the HP tuner. I am assuming i will not be able to change the tune on the fly (like with the Nguage). Just wondering if i always need a laptop handy in case E85 is not available.

You need a laptop with the RTD. There's no way around it.

I will say it loads fast, but yeah the whole laptop portion is def more of a PITA. Once again, at least it loads fast. I just leave the files on my desktop, then you fire up the laptop, the software, plug the RTD in to the port and to your laptop, and then write file.

Other devices like SCT you can still load on the fly with no laptop so if the convenience is a factor you could consider a tuner that utilizes SCT. But as others have said it's not a bad process to use the laptop either.

would buying a used Nguage still be an option? Im just Leary about buying used electronics. Using the laptop is not a deal breaker by any means but it seems like the convenience of the Nguage would be nice considering E85 isnt abundant.

If the nGauge tanks, Lunds RTD can flash over the nGauge flash with a stock tune, or whatever aftermarket tune they gave you. I was going to keep the nGauge, but someone offered me cash for it so I said "bye".

The tunes from Lund are locked so you won't be able to edit them. At the moment you will need a laptop to load the tune onto the device and into the vehicle. Same thing for transferring catalogs from the device to a computer. Without getting into it too much as nothing has officially been released the requirement for a laptop with the RTD will be changing here shortly. Lots of good things coming out from HPT regarding the RTD. So if you get one now don't worry as these features will be available for all RTD's purchased in the past as well as the present.

so I looked into PBD also, and it looks like for the same 93 octane and E85 flex tune and a Ucal or SCT device it's about 200.00 cheaper. and those devices can be used on the go if for some reason a station is out of E85. does the price difference sound right or am i missing something?

I will say that this is something that SCT got right. They allow tuners to upload to the device's cloud, and then you can program in your tuner WiFi - download to the tuner - and skip the whole computer part. Of course it's only certain tuners, but it was a nice feature.

I'm probably also moving to HP tuners, just because of local dyno and tuner support. No regrets with SCT, except they don't support the 2018+ Intake Manifold with BAMA (tunes I bought w/the tuner).

Supposedly Hptuners is going to be releasing and updating the RTD to allow blue tooth use with Android capabilities to eliminate the need for laptops is what I've been reading.

More tuners need to get onboard with diablosport. IMHO by far the best device out there. Just the logging feature is worth it's weight in gold, nevermind the ultrafast load times.
