The metal ones interest me a lot but ill be waiting for pics of the product as i catch up on this thread. Is there any chance the tops of these metal ones can be etched or are they not designed for that?

It allowed me to add text, so we'll see how it turns out. I assume they'll also work just fine with other etching methods from third parties.

I ended up never using mine. looks way too unfinished in the car, even after paint it sticks out like a sore thumb. it was a cool idea though, but a wasted 35-50 bucks however expensive the little thing was

Actually I think its a pretty cool add on. It's something that helps to personalize the car. Instead of posting negative comments some constructive criticism would be more beneficial. Maybe people can post some thoughts that might improve the design and Zack could make another version.

So I read this entire thread..... I am a mechanical designer and was curious why the back ring couldn't be made of metal that is much thinner and stronger then the plastic ring? It could be a simple C or O shaped ring, that just has a "hinge" piece that rolls out on the top? This would also make it easier to add a spring mechanism. I think the cover would need to be redesigned a bit for that hinge but it would for a much more flush and factory appearing look. I squashed that idea because it was metal, but then I saw the posts of the metal covers. Could this be an option with a little bit re-designing? I would LOVE to have a bright red cover, as my phone always hits the button but they just seem to thick and gaudy/not factory appearing to me. Then having to add the 3m tape to the back would make it stick out more I would think. Not bashing your idea, design and product by any means as its a great idea.

I attached this door hinge image because I was talking about something like this, just much smaller.. that would come pre-assembled and with an internal pin that is pushed in.

I think etching the graphic that is on the start button onto the cover may give it a nicer look and get it closer to a high quality oem look.

The only thing I would be worried about with the etching is getting a crisp etch as the surface will not be entirely smooth when ordered from shapeways. Other then that the material should react fine.

The idea I was trying to go for was to have complete manufacturing done by shapeways. It is much easier to sell logistically this way. That being said I am looking into a future redesign. Thanks for your input!

Right, that's why I squashed the idea until I saw the metal covers since I didn't think shapeways could/would do anything in metal.

If it were an all aluminum or metal bracket and cover with a spring-assisted joint to close it, I'm all in. Just don't want a flimsy plastic piece that will break.

The plastic piece is made of a durable nylon material. You will never apply enough force anywhere on the part to break it. A metal ring is unnecessary and will drive the price up.

Im an Industrial Designer, if you need any help with any of this PM me. It looks like your using Solidworks, and that's essentially all I do for a living lol. Also look into McMaster-Carr. They would sell tiny springs loose in bulk that would be perfect for this!. I really like the idea of the button cover and I'd love to help.
