It allowed me to add text, so we'll see how it turns out. I assume they'll also work just fine with other etching methods from third parties.The metal ones interest me a lot but ill be waiting for pics of the product as i catch up on this thread. Is there any chance the tops of these metal ones can be etched or are they not designed for that?

The only thing I would be worried about with the etching is getting a crisp etch as the surface will not be entirely smooth when ordered from shapeways. So I read this entire thread..... I am a mechanical designer and was curious why the back ring couldn't be made of metal that is much thinner and stronger then the plastic ring? It could be a simple C or O shaped ring, that just has a "hinge" piece that rolls out on the top? This would also make it easier to add a spring mechanism. I think the cover would need to be redesigned a bit for that hinge but it would for a much more flush and factory appearing look. I squashed that idea because it was metal, but then I saw the posts of the metal covers. Could this be an option with a little bit re-designing? I would LOVE to have a bright red cover, as my phone always hits the button but they just seem to thick and gaudy/not factory appearing to me. Then having to add the 3m tape to the back would make it stick out more I would think. Not bashing your idea, design and product by any means as its a great idea.
I attached this door hinge image because I was talking about something like this, just much smaller.. that would come pre-assembled and with an internal pin that is pushed in.
The idea I was trying to go for was to have complete manufacturing done by shapeways. It is much easier to sell logistically this way. That being said I am looking into a future redesign. Thanks for your input!
The plastic piece is made of a durable nylon material. You will never apply enough force anywhere on the part to break it. A metal ring is unnecessary and will drive the price up.If it were an all aluminum or metal bracket and cover with a spring-assisted joint to close it, I'm all in. Just don't want a flimsy plastic piece that will break.
