Dont take offense, but that looks iffy at best. I am sure it's no worse than oem, but certainly it cant be measurably better than oem either.

It doesn't have the helmholtz resonator hanging off the bottom like the stock piece, it doesn't have the accordion baffles of the stock piece. I also have a K&N drop in filter in place of the stock filter. I have no doubt it flows better over stock, whether or not it gives a HP bump at higher rpms if someone wants to pay for a dyno session I'll do it. ;)

My IATs with the stock system were always 4 to 5 degrees above ambient. Now they are 3 to 4 degrees above ambient, small but real numbers. Without a tune nobody is going to pick up anything significant with any CAI or modular intake tube short of the new one just out by PMAS. I figure I spent 200 bucks for the same gains practically as someone who shelled out 350 to 400 for a CAI without a tune. I call it a budget minded mod. Eventually I will tune the car but not for a while.

The more and more I look at the stock box I begin to realize it really is a restriction...

I did the same exact thing as free agent and for $200 I believe the same results as a CAI. I also do a res delete h-pipe for a little more flow and sound. Until a tune and other real power mods I'm cool with what I've done and my Butt Dyno says it make a little more power than stock especially on the highway.

I would agree especially at higher rpms for sure. As for tooling around town and in the lower revs the stock box (I believe) does a great job at isolating the air coming into the engine and keeping it as cool as possible. With the stock box you know whatever air comes through the grille is what is going into your engine. With a CAI you are more than likely drawing a large amount of heated under hood air, albeit with the trade off of greater flow. Without a tune to take advantage of that extra air flow I see the advantage in everyday driving going to the stock box or the setup like I have going. Upper end rpms advantage to an untuned CAI over stock. Tuned, all bets are off.

What I would LOVE to see is a CAI like the new PMAS unit that had a cone filter encased inside a stock "like" air box that would only draw air from where the stock unit does, behind the driver grille. Somebody builds and sells that and I will buy it in a heartbeat. :) The AirAid one comes close, but it comes with a restrictor in the tube and again, you need to tune to see max gains. Basically a PMAS intake with AirAid box and I'm there. :) Makes me wonder if you could actually use the PMAS tube and filter with the AirAid box. Hmmm…….
