Greetings!

My ride: ‘17 GT premium, 6 spd manual. 50k miles.
Just got the oil leak, loose valve cover issue fixed. 3 weeks ago.
The -next week- noticed a high grinding sound. From what I can tell after extensive research on google and youtube, it sounds like an AC compressor issue. Haven’t taken it in to the dealer for disgnosis, to give my wallet a break.

I also had the trans fluid changed along with the valve cover fix.

The noise starts after a few seconds after starting, sometimes it stops, or changes when I turn AC on or off. Otherwise AC works fine. It’s not real loud. Easiest to hear away from traffic or in line at fast food restaurant. Being next to a wall like mc donalds or pharmacy at walgreens makes it more noticeable.

But my question is… it’s a strange coincidence that this noise AC issue, or whatever it is, started days after the oil leak, valve cover repair. Is there anything that the oil leak valve cover fix could cause to break? The leaking oil I saw was below where it was leaking from the valve cover. I.e. I don’t think that oil from the leak got into any other components like the AC.

I understand that it could be anything given the lack of details, but I thought I‘d throw it out to the group anyway.

I’ve had both issues on my 15 Mustang GT. The AC compressor for me was out and it wasn’t cooling at all. I also had the rack and pinion go out on me and that’s a common issue with our cars. Valve cover, AC compressor and rack n pinion. Rack and pinion was over 2k to fix lol

How did you fix the valve cover leak ? Did you upgrade the valve covers to the aluminum ones?

The dealer did the fix according to the TSB.

Valve cover TSB fix (or even a DIY fix) has absolutely no correlation to in-op, noisy or malfunctioning A/C issues.

It's very possible that what you are hearing is a failing compressor clutch assembly. That can be replaced as a unit instead of having to replace the entire compressor itself. These clutch heads are known to be a failure point on *some* S550's. If the noise is there and getting worse, eventually the entire clutch head will blow off - and you'll be left with other potential damages.

Your compressor is going bad. I had to replace mine twice actually on my last mustang. Its a known issue and ford didn't do anything to fix it. Have the dealership go and look and have them replace it sooner rather than later. If it does go boom it'll send crap into your evaporator which is the dreaded $3k+ and two week job.
