it's just like everything else, they don't make them like they used to...

that's why when i read the other day that their S550 will be theirs until they die. i think that's crazy.

cars these days are disposable. i can't imagine owning this car (or ANY car) for more than 5 years.

FoMoCo USA is notorious for leaving certain metals (Cast Iron usually) unpainted. Essentially their metallurgy engineers have determined which metal left uncoated will last X. The bean-counters and product planners have a number in mind that the car/truck needs to last in any North American market.

I don't have a problem with this since they usually get the calculation right, the car will last as long as it needs to. However, I would prefer painted metal since it tells me that someone cares and bean counters be damned!

So I had a look at our Tundra and it doesn't have rust on it on the axles or the brake calipers and it has about 50k miles.

Could be a ford thing? I noticed something similar on a recent F-150 too. The generation right before the aluminum trucks came out.

Should be unacceptable.... This isn't a 12,000 car.... They should take a little bit more pride and use non corrosive materials...

I mean, HELLO! Ford is Detroit....we are the Detroit motor city... We use more salt than ever as our winters have been terrible.... The lest they could do is make a vehicle that doesn't rot away

Factory quality aside.. I'm sure Eastwood has a nice coating just for this type of thing. I'll probably order something soon.

If you notice where the corrosion is; its on parts that are thick and heavy stampings or cast iron. Cast iron does not rot, and if the car is still on the road in 30 years it will either be A: a garage queen in pristine condition, or a driver. Either way the corrosion on these parts should not affect its ability to function (long time Ford owner in the salt belt).

Its also a good idea to bath your underside chassis IMO , especially when you rotate your tires so you can get at those hard to reach areas. Keep your eyes on the those areas of concern to make sure it remains limited to those original un-coated areas. I would not paint those areas, since these unprotected hard points are not an oversight by Ford (annoying as this may be), being in the business of metallurgy for over 100 years.

What about http://finalcoat.ca/ can anybody confirm if this device really works. I want to buy it but I don't have enough proof.

Rust is just part of owning a ride. With the salt in the Northeast its even worse. Those parts are normal as said, prior.:headbang:
