its a shelby. cobra refers to the "AC Cobra" back in the 60's..
currently cobra is just a character inside the shelby badge. not sure if this makes sense lol
Don’t forget the 99-04 SVT Cobras :)

I have a hard time even referring to it as a "Shelby" - usually just refer to it as a Ford or Mustang GT350. Not like Carroll was around to have anything to do with it and I'm not familiar of any SAI involvement - but maybe there was.
I was at Shelbyfest last year (http://shelbyfest.net/) and Gary Patterson, President of Shelby, stopped by to look at my 2017 GT350. I asked him if it was a real Shelby or a Ford Mustang GT350. He said, "Carroll Shelby was aware of the Ford Program and approved of what FoMoCo was doing. Yes, it's a Shelby." I'll take his word for it. But, no, IMHO, it's not a Cobra.

It's all a bunch of Junior High nonsense. I had a 1970 Torino GT with a 429 "cobrajet" engine in it. The engine plaque said "429". It was not the Cobra model which was a stripped down Fairlane with a cobra sticker on the fenders. Same engine, 429 CJ. Both could be ordered with a 429 SCJ. But, Ford used the cobra name to sell a car against the Roadrunner: stripped down, big block.
Actually my car was much rarer as it had hidden headlights, console, honeycomb taillights, more chrome, etc. No cobra on it anywhere.
That said, I might just put one of these on my '15 Mustang GT just to tick everyone off. Maybe some other stickers and emblems, too.

It's all about the $. Let's face it, the name Shelby sells cars!
Now you have it!

If you put the exact same GT350 parts on a Mustang what would you have? The difference would tell you what the Shelby name is worth.

It is worth a LOT. It does nothing. Same car.

Looks VERY COOL, no doubt. And, making unique Ford designed Mustang parts for a Shelby only, and then a few years later making those same parts available to guys like me in a Mustang GT helps us to "feel" part of the Shelby culture because we have similar parts on our cars.

I think the GT350 is a fantastic car. Just commenting on the money part.

This is not a real Cobra either. But, it's a bit closer in theory.

I’m gonna settle this once and for all.
Ford has cool car and chassis names.
GM DOES NOT!
I’ll never understand GM’s codes and names.
Zl1, 1LE, Z06, LT1, LS1-2-3-4 etc.
ZR1, LT, LS, Z28, SS etc.
to many damn Z’s, L’s and numbers. Stupid.
It goes from the cars to the trucks. Nobody can keep track of them all.

Everyone knows what a F150 FX2 or FX4 is or a Mustang GT or GT350/500 or Mach1.
You tell someone you have a camaro zl1 1le with a LT4 they’ll look at you like wtf.
Stupid sub models GM!

The Shelby Mustang GT 350 that started it all way back in 1965 certainly does not mention anything about being a Cobra or the Cobra name even though both the Cobra's and the GT350's were assembled right next to each other at Shelby American!

It sure must have been nice to test drive one of the original GT350's as advertised back in the day unlike what we have in todays world.

If someone was lucky enough to get their hands on one of the 36 Competition R models back in 1965 the list price from SA was $5,950.

If you couldn't get your hands or could not afford one of the competition cars you could try to secure one of the 8 GT350 Drag cars ('65/'66) for $5,441 plus $200 for an AFX lift kit and $90 for a .450 lift cam.

The '65 GT350 Drag cars came with a 5.13 ring and pinion but was reduced the follow year in '66 to only a 4.86 rear end ratio!:eyebulge:

I believe these cars held the AHRA record for the B-Production class!

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

The best 1/4 mile time for one of these factory drag cars that I am aware of was a 12.68 turned in by Gus Zuidema at Lebanon, New York. Don't recall his top end speed but would guess around ~110 MPH.

A stock GT350 back in 1965 was running a 14.5 second quarter mile at 98 MPH.

Ken Miles' best at Road America racing a GT350R was 2:45.... a current 350R can do it in the low-to-mid 2:30s with a decent driver and no special prep. And, it can be driven home when the day is over.

Golden days, for sure.

If Ken Miles was with us today and still in his prime I could only imagine what kind of times he would post in one of these new generation R models.:first:

I would like to think that Ken is looking down on all of us and giving the Ford Performance Team a big thumbs up regarding these new GT350R's!:hail:
