It's that time of the year again. I've been running a few quotes, seems most insurers dont mind an exhaust but as soon as you tick suspension mods the price ramps up. I only wanted to do the cradle lockout, steeda irs locating dowels and a bmr 2 point brace. Difference Is 440 with a exhaust with regular insurer and it jumps to 640 with both exhaust and the suspension mods. Looks like only specialist insurers allow suspension changes. So far had quotes from a plan and brentacre. 37 11 years no claims and live in a good area. Anyone else finding the same or know any other companies I can try. I'm just not sure whether it's worth 200 quid just to add those few bits?

Thoughts?

That’s a scandalous jump in price. I’m with Admiral (and have been for many years, pre stang) and i’ve only ever been charged the admin fee to add mods - including lowering springs. I seem to remember it would have more of an impact to your premium if lowering was more than 50mm, but my Eibach springs only drop the height around 25mm.

what i usually do is get a very vague quote from a comparison site that’s lower than my auto renewal then hop on the phone to admiral and say “beat that” and they always do. Last year I didn’t even do the comparison, i just got on the phone and said “be nice if it was around £500” and they said “sure, £500 it is”. Loyalty seems to go a long way with some insurers.

hope that helps!

Thanks Kristian, im glad it's not just me that thinks that's crazy. Are you saying Admiral are mod friendly? I'm not sure they came up on the comparison site once I ticked suspension mods. Think they were quite competitive though with just an exhaust.

not sure if i’d describe them as mod friendly, definitely competitive though when you get on the phone - especially if you’re armed with other quotes.

for example, they didn’t have an option for wheel spacers so the change i made was to “non standard wheels” lol

There seems to be an issue with their online site, it wont let me quote, keeps telling me I already have an account, tried 2 different email address and also the reset password link whi h goes nowhere. I'll have to bell them. Not sure what I could call the cradle lockout kit!

Claiming mods is horrendous, they charge you for just fitting them and then you have to pay again if you want them insured. Unfortunately claiming mods puts you in the boy racer category where in actuality you're a car enthusiasts and probably less likely to make a claim.

their offices are based in Wales, i always make sure i get someone with a welsh accent! They’ve always been superb. I’m sure they have other call centres, so i’d hang up if you get through to an outsourced call centre where they just read off a script.

Did you actually speak to A-Plan in Thatcham as that's their specialist branch for modded stuff?

Def recommend A Plan Thatcham branch. Make sure you call the Thatcham branch as above they specialise in modified cars

I rang them to notify the exhaust change when I fitted my H pipe and they didn’t charge me any extra !

Lots of people with modified mustangs use them as they are very reasonable and cover the mods

Admiral were great when I wrote off a 17 GT. They replaced it under their vehicle replacement scheme with a new built 19 GT. of same spec. I would’ve stayed with them but the renewal was understandably a bit steep! Good insurance provider.

I'm a bit bemused by the low quotes I see posted on here, whenever this topic arises.

Just for clarity.

What mileage restriction are you setting?

What, if any, additional "services" are you adding?

For balance, I was frequently an Admiral customer, for over 25 years. But in recent years their quotes went stratospheric.
Perhaps they have an ageist tarrif.
And if you have to claim... Oh boy!

going up in age after a certain point definitely increase the insurance especially in high performance cars as you start to become a higher risk as you get older.
By comparison last years insurance (with all mods declared) was ÂŁ340 fully comp 6 thousand a year (i've put 11k on the mustang in 4 years) 20 years no claims + it protected no voluntary excess and ÂŁ250 compulsory.
