HUD Fan Or Not?

Never drove a car with HUD so I can't say if I would like it, but some guy at work was talking about that camaro car or whatever its called and how it has HUD and I wasn't totally listening, but I think I'll pass on HUD.....unless it's standard

I have read plenty of posts regarding HUD (heads up display.) I've driven several cars that have HUD. Quite honestly, I'm not really a fan, I find them distracting. I get that it's immediate info (cool.) however, I enjoy watching the road, other cars and squirrels. Todays cars are are so packed with technology (center consoles with 87 buttons, switches and toggles. The computer screen between the speedo and rpm gauge gives more info than than all Apollo missions combined.) It seems it's unnecessary and to be honest not very visually appealing. What does it take 1/10 of a second to adjust your eyes south to get the info you need? I keen on driving by visual cues from the road and the feedback I receive from my own senses.

Not a fan of the OE installations that insist you be staring at/through the display all the time. Not at all.

But if the display was located over by the A-pillar I could change my mind. For track days, I invested in an Aeroforce Interceptor gauge and mounted it on the A pillar, and currently have it set up to display mph and coolant temperature, with the annunciator (the two LEDs at the top flash red) set for whatever upshift rpm I feel like using that day.

Sorry for the semi-hurried installation, but trying to fit the gauge holder any closer wasn't worth my limited time when I got it and still isn't a priority item because I just don't notice it when I'm driving. It's useful enough that I'm going to just leave it there - the coolant temperature is going to be as useful during the winter for monitoring warm-up as it is at track days for keeping tabs on the hot temperatures.

An OE HUD in the same general area would of course not have the appearance glitches.

HUD as safety feature

I have HUD on my 3 series. It's a great safety feature because I can see speed and navigation without looking down or to the side. Having had that for the last couple of years, I would certainly be willing to pay for it, assuming it is well executed. Not a deal-breaker though.

No, I'm not confused at all.

The concept of getting a couple of the more important gauge displays up above dashboard-top level is fine. Insisting that you must have them in your central vision is not.

What I have is the best of what a HUD can provide with none of the downsides. Like I said above I might change my mind about OE HUDs if they'd put them off to the side instead of dead straight ahead. There simply is no need to be bombarded with that information every moment that you're driving, but if you get it out of my face I can see the potential advantages.

If it matters any, I mounted a tachometer low on the A pillar much like this little setup . . . over 40 years ago. For exactly the same reasons of easy display visibility and less eye adapting without obstructing/distracting from the business of driving down the road.

Not at all, in my opinion! It allows you to get information without taking your eyes off of the road. We've had cars that had it and it was a Nice touch. There are even companies that can hook a V1 radar detector up to it.

I think Ford should've offered it as an option at least.

I had a HUD on my C6 Corvette and it was easily the most missed feature when I traded it in. Most people hating on HUDs probably haven't used one regularly. It's a must have option if available IMO. I don't see how being able to see your MPH without shifting your eyes off the road is a bad thing.

There is no need to be continuously monitoring your speed, meaning that most of the time a heads-up MPH display right in front of you represents unnecessary visual clutter. It will draw attention that might be better left for noticing more important things.

I had HUD on my 2013 BMW 335i. Personally, I wouldn't pay extra for it. If it was free with the Nav I would get it. Other than that I didn't really see the benefit of it. Overall its overated.
