Why did I have to see this?!? Now I want to play but I'm still under warranty till February... :frown:
Wouldn't it make sense to do this UNDER warranty near expiry, where you have a non-zero chance of getting it fixed if messed up, and leaving it alone versus doing this as soon as your warranty expires.

The second you start this you can kiss your warranty on any and all Sync3 systems goodbye. They call it "jail" breaking for a reason.

Okay sure, but best case you get a free good faith repair, worst case if the system is bricked to the point of a black screen, nobody knows. And like you said it only invalidates the sync3 warranty. If for some reason an unrepairable brick happens out of warranty, from what I understand you just replace the APIM module, which is going for $200-$400. Not a terribly big job if your car is old enough to not have a warranty.

Trust me when I tell you that you will not be getting a "good faith"repair. The second they try to connect and cannot do it, you're done. And by the way, the Sync3 system is not just entertainment. It controls everything you see on that screen. Bricking it means a lot more than just replacing the APIM. It will be costly to repair. So proceed at your own risk, it's your car, do whatever you want. But don't say you weren't warned.

It may control a lot of things, but I don't understand how bricking an APIM will break anything else that a new APIM won't fix. Care to share?

Honestly I have never spoken to anyone who has bricked their Sync system. But that said, that much like a PC or mobile device, there is a pretty good chance that if one part is bricked other parts will not work and/or be damaged. Only someone who has gone through this can answer definitely. Regardless any damage incurred by doing this will fall squarely at the feet of the owner. Ford will not do anything.

@HoosierDaddy So in other words nobody actually knows LOL. If you want my own anecdotal evidence, I've looked all over online and have not once saw a APIM module need replacement after a failed upgrade/jailbreak let alone damage other hardware components. It's unlikely as the device is only sending out low voltage signals.

The APIM can be replaced and the programming restored from downloaded ASBUILT data specific to your VIN. It will require Forscan, but the procedure is no different than what is performed when upgrading a 4” to 8” SYNC system. You can find non-nav APIM’s used pretty cheap and even the nav versions aren’t bad. I’ve done that upgrade on my wife’s V6, so this is from personal experience.

Edit: Bricking the APIM will not affect your other modules, just overall functionality until restored.
