How much oil is too mucj in intake?

Pulled my bumper today to install intercooler. I pulled the cold side pipe off of intercooler and had oil or oily substance drip onto my hand as I did. At least 6-8 large drops almost immediately. This is after car was sitting on ramps for @2 hours. Also noticed oily residue on outside of intercooler where the pipe sits.

I have never noticed car smoking at idle, but have been told of puff of smoke at WOT.

Car only has 11K miles. Oil changes every 3300 miles (Motorcraft oil, for the time being). Only mods are UPR DVCC and Cobb Stage 1 OTS tune. Tune added at @5K, CC added about 6600mi. Last oil change I drained catch can, drained over 2oz.

Will be making a call to dealer in the morning. Is there anything else I should be concerned with? Should I go ahead and pull intercooler to try and determine how much build up there may be inside?

If you had 9-11 drops I'd be concerned, but since you had only 6-8 drops you'll be just fine.


In all seriousness I would hope it's from before installing the catch can.

So I'd clean everything out and check back in 1000 miles.

If you are really concerned go ahead and take it to the dealer.

Any oil in the intake is bad, our car run on gas not oil and it's just the degree on which you should be concerned. I would add a clean side filter for safety when ever you get to it it, clean out intakes and see if anything changes

Out of curiousity, I went ahead and pulled the intercooler. Stood it up on one end to allow oil to pool. After just a minute, I poured out almost 1 ounce of oil. Will be calling a couple dealers shortly.

I had the same experience when I changed my IC.
I recently installed my UPR dual valve catch can. I followed the instructions that Adam posted where you take the intake manifold off. When I picked the manifold up to reinstall there was a small puddle of oil. Far more than a few drops.
It's a known issue. You need to purchase a good catch can.

Yep. I had a decent amount run out of my intake also. Adam said it's normal when installing the catch can but I'm glad it's been corrected. My car has 4200 miles on it just for reference.

When it was all said and done, I drained almost 2oz of oil out my intercooler.

What has me perplexed, is that I installed my catch can almost 6000 miles ago. Has that oil been sitting there this whole time? Not to mention the fact that the oil that came out of the intercooler is different than what I drain out of my catch can (catch is lighter brown, thinner, and smells of fuel, intercooler oil seems like straight oil).

Checked throttle body and it had oil in it. Sure enough, if I take it to a dealer, they'll have it for 3 days and tell me they can't find a problem.

Guys with F150's have been dealing with it for years. Ive watched videos where they pour oil straight out of the intercooler so I wouldn't be surprised by what you've seen. Catch can oil will have more vapor in it and that's what you're smelling.
