I started this hood corrosion thread a while back. According to the Ford dealer, after me being a PITA about this issue, Ford will replace my hood under warranty. I have had the car for about 5 and a half years.

My dealer said that they use a local 'partner' to paint the new hood with only a 1-year warranty on the new painted hood (seems to me that it should be longer).

Questions:
Can I go to any body shop to get this done or do I need to use this Ford dealer?

To those that may have had this done (or know something about it), does the 'new' hood fit the same as the factory one?

The dealer said that I may have to leave it there for up to a week or so (sounds long to me), is this about right?

TIA for your thoughts and wisdom.

Make sure it's a Ford hood. If Ford paying they can select the paint shop. Wat a few weeks, check for orange peel and get shop to correct if needed, and get full PPF on it.

Thank you for that. I did confirm that it is a Ford hood, and I will check it after a few weeks.

Paint matching can be real tricky and they might want to do a blend into the fenders to get it right?

I had mine replaced in the middle of a New England winter Feb. 2024. Dealership (not where bought) did not even look at the car, I reported what was going on and they immediately said that it had to be replaced. Done by outside shop about 3 miles from them. Came out beautifully, can't tell that it was replaced.

Most Ford dealers around here don't actually have dealer body shop or Ford exclusive body shops. They instead a have a network of Ford authorized Body shops.

Be it Ford or Ford authorized they should be using exclusively Ford OEM parts. I'm sure there exists situations where that's hasn't been the case. But in general.

A week from start to finish isn't terrible. Definitely don't want a rushed job.

You said your car is 5 years old, so I'm sure you're aware the paint match won't be spot on.(Some body shops do a good job of tweaking new paint to match the older paint. But it's never perfect.

More direct: The hood should fit just as good as you would expect from the factory. The paint should be reasonably close. And 1 week is decent.

On the replacement hood - be sure to ask and get it in writing as to what the warranty is on the actual new sheet metal replacement for corrosion.

The “paint” R&R may be guaranteed by the contracted shop up to 1 year, but the sheet metal should also have its own warranty.

This hood corrosion nonsense has been happening since the 2005 Mustang introduction when it had the aluminum hood which replaced all steel (60’s up to 1993) and then the fiberglass hood over steel skeleton (94-04).

Does this corrosion thing stop, or does it keep going and get worse and worse?

The shop that is doing my hood said that they will be using a color meter of some sort on the fender to match the new hood paint to the body. No feathering in. Sound about right?

It keeps spreading and getting worse.

Most modern collision shops have access to a "color camera" that scans the existing paint and creates a color mix formula. They are typically very accurate. The variable is the person mixing and applying the paint.

I went through this three times on my 06 GT which I bought new. Ford repainted the hood under warranty in 2009 and again out of warranty a few years later. Third time was on me. I contacted several body shops last time around and most were hesitant to take on. ford had a TSB on this. If the aluminum is not prepped correctly it can still bubble. I sold it in 2020 and at that time hood was holding up. You may want to provide body shop with TSB and see if they’re willing to follow Ford’s recommendations.
Here’s a link to TSB. Good luck.

Good to know for sure. They are giving me a new Ford hood that will be prepped and painted properly according to them. Properly being the KEY word!
Fingers crossed.

This makes me consider a carbon fiber or fiberglass hood. Unfortunately I hear very mixed opinions on those, especially fitment. Anybody with experience and a recommendation?

The hood on my garage kept 2006 developed a paint crack probably associated with corrosion. Just seems inevitable with the Ford aluminum parts. How in the world is Ford dealing with all of those aluminum F150 parts?

The aluminum trucks are doing OK. They're just a PITA to repair.

There are many choices for A/M hoods. I chose my Cervini hood because I love the look and it retains the factory washers and doesn't require hood pins. The fit is a 9.5 out of 10. The only thing I don't like is the extra weight.
