I just had car detailed and noticed paint bubbling up on edge of hood. Anyone else experience this?

Was this car in the accident collision? Are you the first owner? It's hard to imagine that the car came from the factory with such a defect.

I purchased this car new and it has never been in a collision.

Ford warranty says that they must replace the actual hood to repair this. It’s aluminum corrosion which has been common for Ford.

Wow. I can't believe this is still an issue; it was very common on the S197s. Had it on my 2011; it was repaired but the body shop did a piss poor job. Ended up trading the car anyway but was still very annoying to deal with.

Bummer.

This happens when iron particles become embedded in the aluminum hood prior to paint. Eventually the two metals react to each other causing corrosion under the paint. Ford covers this under the 5 year unlimited mile coating warranty. It’s important you have the dealer look at this for warranty consideration before the paint breaks open revealing the corrosion. If the paint breaks prior to you taking it in, they could claim that a rock chipped the paint, which led to the corrosion (it’s aluminum, which means that wouldn’t be the cause but I had one dealership not want to submit a warranty claim for this reason. Another dealer submitted it on my explorer and got it approved by Ford for a warranty repair within hours.)

I know this has been a problem for expedition tailgates and explorer hoods, but I haven’t heard of it on a mustang yet.

Since iron is embedded in the aluminum, as others have said, they’ll end up replacing the hood with a new one. If they simply repainted, the same thing would happen again. I’d be inclined to take it to a Ford dealer that has its own body shop with a lifetime warranty if possible. Aluminum is a B**** to work with at the body shop and requires expertise and special equipment.

Best of luck.

Had a similar issue pop up on my Explorer a few months ago that I bought new from the dealer. They just replaced the hood, no biggie.

My GT350 never had this issue luckily.

Thanks to all for your replies. I took car to Ford dealer this morning for inspection and collision manager informed me that Ford will send replacement hood. I'll keep you posted.

Where exactly is this on your hood? On the leading edges I assume.

I'll have to keep an eye on mine. First time i'm hearing about this issue.

Yes, along the front leading edge of the hood near the fenders, and along the trailing edge of the hood (near windshield).

Took my 2016 GT convertible for paint bubbling on left front edge of hood to Ford dealer. Took pics and submitted to Ford, 4 hrs later service manager called and they are going to replace with new hood.
