Anyone here running 800+ hp with stock cats without issues? Trying to decide if I should buy different cats, I dont want to melt a stock cat and damage anything. I am considering mak performance pipes with GESI UHP cats that supposedly can handle 850 hp per exhaust bank. Im going for 750-800 rwhp for now on e85 low boost just wondering if my cats are going to fail very quickly or not at all.

What hp do the OEM cats usually fail at?

there is a tsb on 2018+ and early 2019 stock cats. I wouldn't chance it on an 18 or early 2019. Too many 2018 roush guys, who have to keep their cats, have lost (some lost both) theirs already. myself included

You might want to go with catless or kooks green cats if you want to make some decent power and prevent cat blowout.

Im thinking about Mak performance pipes with the GESI cats. I was going to stay stock but if they will just melt and potentially damage my motor then I will probably go with this setup..

Ive seen some long tube installs take like 6 hours of pain idk if I want to go that route and I think just the deletes with 3" pipe and gesi cats will be nearly as good.

How did you know yours were melted or broken? Did it happen after a high speed run?

Ive heard that even with the Gesi high HP cats in, you have to keep cat overtemp protection in the tune, also their max temp is 1700 still.. doesnt seem higher than stock on the max temperature so IDK if they are even better. But I dont want to not have cats for a few reasons, mainly smell, but also sound I live in a condo and have a 3" catback and its already too loud on cold starts.

I got a code but I was expecting it. My exhaust was unusually chatty. Like I was a ricer with a ghost tune but most guys have no idea until they get the codes.

I heard the Gesi cats are top quality... not sure though as I’ve never used them.

What cats are on the GT500? Have they experienced any issues yet?

How accurate is the nGauge cat temp PID? Any way to know of your custom tune has cat protection enabled or not?

I’m wanting to do cat deletes as well for safety but I really don’t want to increase the overall exhaust volume much.

I've recently installed the MAK cat-delete pipes in my Mustang. I went this route because at the cost of OEM cats, I didn't want to melt the stock ones. I also opted to have a flange welded on my OEM cat, so I can just unbolt the MAK pipes and re-install the OEM cats and pass CA SMOG. My car has a Stage II Whipple Gen V blower.

Reading posts on this fourm, I've come under the impression that all of the aftermarket cats, including the Green cats from Kooks, are less durable than the OEM ones. I didn't want to spend $800.00 bucks and have them melt on me. Removing the cats did increase the sound volume of the exhaust. My Borla S-Type exhaust with the Borla resonator, is borderline loud at cold start and WOT.

How much louder do you find it?

Did you notice a seat of the pants difference in performance as well? I’m mainly feeling like you - don’t want to melt the stock ones and will also weld the flange so it can be removed.

Thanks for you input!

In terms of loudness, it's just to the point where some sensitive people may get annoyed with the cold starts. Putting along is no big deal. Mash the throttle and then it really gets mean. If a cop was close and I went WOT, it would get his or her attention. I did have my OEM cat on the drivers side modified, so it can be re-installed in a few minutes.

I haven't really noticed a HP difference, but they say it's the next best thing to long tubes. Main thing is, I did it to save the cats. Any HP gain is a bonus.

That’s what I’m thinking as well. Safer lol.

Just worries about the increase in volume at this point.

It's not if the cats will fail, but when with anything over 650+ wheel.

Eek! Well then... guess this is next lol.

What do the GT 500 ZL1 and Hellcats use stock? Are they prone to cat failures?

Any accuracy in the cat temp PID?

I think the gesi cats should hold up, but I saw this VMP video saying they still need to have cat overtemp protection enabled in the tune , and their max temp 1700* so IDK if they are actually better than stock in terms of durability.

Anyone here have experience with cat failure, or run 800+ hp through cats for years without issues?

There are a few guys running the Roush stage 2 that have melted their cats.

General consensus is that all aftermarket cats will likely fail, if you've gone FI.
